Synopsis

The Bridge of San Luis Rey is American author Thornton Wilder's second novel, first published in 1927 to worldwide acclaim. It tells the story of several interrelated people who die in the collapse of an Inca rope-fiber suspension bridge in Peru, and the events that lead up to their being on the bridge. A friar who has witnessed the tragic accident then goes about inquiring into the lives of the victims, seeking some sort of cosmic answer to the question of why each had to die.

Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Stevecorp Don't listen to the negative reviews
Tayloriona Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Abbigail Bush what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Desertman84 The Bridge of San Luis Rey is a drama featuring an ensemble cast led by F. Murray Abraham,Kathy Bates,Gabriel Byrne,Geraldine Chaplin,Robert De Niro,Harvey Keitel,Pilar López de Ayala,Geraldine Chaplin, John Lynch, and brothers Mark Polish and Michael Polish.Thornton Wilder's award- winning novel is given a lavish screen adaptation in this historical drama from writer and director Mary McGuckian. In Peru in 1714, a rickety bridge collapsed as five people were attempting to cross, forcing them to plunge to their deaths. Brother Fray Juniper is a Franciscan monk who has been given the duty of looking into the tragedy by the archbishop of Lima, and to learn what he can about the victims. It is Fray's belief that these particular people died for some reason, and that it is his duty to determine why God chose these five people to perish, while others in the vicinity survived. After five years, Juniper delivers his findings to the archbishop as well as the viceroy of Peru, as the Fray tells them of the lives of the troubled Dona Maria, the nun Pepita, warm-hearted Uncle Pio, street kid- turned-actress La Perichola, and others involved in the tragedy. The Bridge of San Luis Rey is a beautiful movie. The film's shooting locations are exquisite. The sets are stunning. The costumes are gorgeous. The actors are superlative. It is an intense philosophical undertaking that examines questions of faith, fate and chance.
rah882 Stunning period drama set in decadent colonial Peru. It is all very confusing with continuity problems, but nevertheless a wonderful piece. But Kathy Bates as a Spanish aristocrat! please!!! Kept expecting Harvey Keitel to jump into a yellow cab any moment. Robert DiNiro as a Bishop .... what a disaster... who were the twins? what was that all about? The bridge scene is great though. I thought the art direction was impeccable and a great score. The DVD has some interesting behind the scenes views. All in all the set locations were well done all shot in Andalucia and southern Spain, all very authentic except that Kathy Bates comes blustering in straight off the set of Frazier trying so hard to be some how all Spanish, Catholic and Aristocratic (ie everything she is not) and blowing it completely
irenesurgeon Although the story is very very interesting and different than other movies, although it has some very special things to give us, it has some problems with casting. First Robert De Niro, was not at all matching to his role. Also, the actor "Perichole", was not such a diva that should have been to create the atmosphere that such a play would really need.. Imagine this play with Monica Belluchi as Perichole and an other Archbishop, lets say Antony Hopkins! Kathy Bates was really VERY good and she saved the situation. I vote for this movie be played again with an improvement in the cast ( just the 2 above)... The story about the search on the deaths is something unsolved until today. The way that the poor protagonist and researcher is dying is not a phenomenon of the past, if you imagine what is happening today in modern research... This movie was good, even with these problems because offered things to the audience.
lelia-agostinho Most films are about love but this one is about all kinds of love, how much we need it and how much we can misunderstand it. It's a very, very unusual film. I would think it would be for cinema lovers only but, as a matter of fact, everyone in the theater was touched by it. I live in a very small town and so I knew the people in the audience. As the film went on I thought some people would not understand it, because the edition is very, very original, so I was surprised that, not only everyone did understand but all were captivated by it. You get a sense of wonder and I believe the word for this film is: sublime. The relationship between love and death is clearly rendered. One of the best movies I have ever seen.
