Donald Seymour This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
gridoon2018 Perhaps not the great movie it could have been with this cast (truly one of the finest ever assembled) and director, but a good one. All of the five stories are a trifle too long, but Julien Duvivier puts his distinctive stamp on several parts of the film, like in a superlative sequence where Ginger Rogers and Henry Fonda practically make love with words, or the inexplicably wonderful spectacle of all male audience members removing their black overcoats after symphony conductor Charles Laughton has done the same. The film has variety: it is by turns twisty, amusing, romantic, sad and hopeful. See also Duvivier's follow-up the next year (with some of the same cast members), "Flesh And Fantasy". Personally I preferred that one, but I'm probably biased because it has a supernatural bent. *** out of 4.
Rand Alfaris Charles Boyer's performance - 1st tale: the triangle love affair-was great as ever, Henry Fonda's- 2nd tale: The best man and the bride- quiet shy character is the secret of his charm and the key behind his brilliant performance, not only in this role but in every role he had ever played. The tales themselves were intriguing, Beautiful writing, fast and easy going. with unexpected resolutions. EXCEPT for the 3rd tale: the Musician. The scene with the audience's laughing was one of the most stupid scenes I have ever seen. I cannot believe that the people were really that superficial, and for that matter, no audience has a taste for classic music music could be that cruel and superficial. Weren't any philosopher, priest, teacher among them? Weren't any humble and compassionate soul among them? I cannot believe it, and that is why the scene was stupid and unrealistic. Probably I am mistaken, the people were and still are very much superficial regardless the level of their education, they follow the crowd blindly with absent minds. The 4th tale: class 1917 was truly wonderful; the writer expressed the idea in a very deep elegant manner, to the opposite of the writer if the 3rd tale. The 5th and the last tale, on the surface, it included Christian concept of loving each other and wishes' granted ideas. However, if someone wants to read in the depth of the story, it contained socialist\communist ideas. The movie is a "must see". Just neglect the 3rd tale.
nomoons11 I expected an early 40's cheer me up type of film but got a really entertaining look into how a Tops and Tails coat effects the lives of everyone it comes into contact with.I could go into each of the 6 stories but it would take too long. A coat is designed by a tailor and his best sewer decides to quit and throws a curse on the coat. After this, we get 6 really interesting stories on how the coat will effect each one. With loads of star power from Charles Boyer to Edward G. Robinson and Ginger Rogers. There are just bags full of great actors in this and they all do a very good job for each of their stories. Some are funny and some are uplifting. If I were to pick one of the bunch that I really liked it would be the one with Edward G. Robinson. Watch a master at work. He's just a superb actor and in his section of this fine film, he shows you why he's so well regarded. Not a lot to say about a film with so much to see. Just trust me. Give it a watch and see a lot of familiar faces give you 2 hours of entertainment you won't forget.
jbviolin Excellent film in the genre. I agree with the previous comments with one addition. One cannot ignore the historical significance of the final scene. The last scene features the great bass singer Paul Robeson, celebrated singer-turned-actress Ethel Waters, and the memorable Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson. The scene also has the music of Hall Johnson and the Hall Johnson singers. With this stellar cast of talent the film finishes by showcasing some of the finest black talent ever in the business. Finding good recordings of the arrangements of Hall Johnson by his singers on film is very difficult to do. Here we have it included in a very entertaining film.
