Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Flaviaj1991 Where do I start? I must say that, in theory, I really like the character of Damian. The problem is his execution within the story. The writers make Damian so invincible and so powerful that it's annoying as hell. I mean, OK, we know he was raised by the League of Assassins and we know that a universe of super-heroes is not usually realistic, but ... for God's sake, he's still a f.u.c.k.i.n.g 10- year-old boy. Did it cost something for the writers to give a Damian some REAL vulnerability and fragility ? Watching this boy fighting on the same level of Nightwing it's painful. Watching Slade Wilson having his ass kicked by a brat was painful. What the hell was that final fight? The brat literally had both his arms severely injured and stuck by two swords, and yet he was able to free himself. More than freeing himself, he continued to fight as if NOTHING had happened. More than continue fighting, he defeated Slade, a high- profile assassin twice his age, with no help!!! Seriously DC? Give me a break!
spikeprime This is the single worst Batman movie to date. I truly believe this is worse than Batman and Robin, because at least that film is funny. The plot makes no sense, the villain's motivations are frankly ridiculously stupid and nonsensical, the fights are uninspired, Damian Wayne is at his worst in terms of insufferable characterisation and insipid, mean-spirited dialogue, the voice acting ranges from fairly good to the worst I've heard in professional animation.Deathstroke is changed from an incredible and intelligent fighter into a pathetic, idiotic bumbler who gets knocked out with one punch from Batman. The supposedly unstoppable army of Man-Bats are actually less effective and far dumber than normal human beings, and stopped in one of the weakest anti-climaxes I've ever seen. The plot is so poorly handled that I honestly started to laugh out loud at what were supposed to be tense scenes. That's not even getting into the scene between Batman and Talia which seems to suggest the writers are rape apologists--yes, Bruce states he was drugged and raped by Talia, but that it was "not all bad" which is undoubtedly the most horribly awful thing I've heard in a DC movie.Bottom line, I only recommend this to people if you want a truly hilariously inept film to watch and laugh about with your friends, which is precisely what I did after trying to watch it on my own.
dramafreak42 I'm not going to beat around the bush: this thing is bad with a capital B. There are very few things that work, and they don't even come close to offsetting the things that don't work at all. The entire thing is a misfire almost from the very beginning. The story centers around Damian Wayne, the son of Batman and his sometimes foe, sometimes lover Talia al Ghul. When the League of Assassins is decimated by Deathstroke, Talia leaves Damian with Batman. The two almost immediately butt heads due to Damian being raised as an assassin and Batman having his "no killing rule." Despite this, Batman attempts to train and bond with Damian, even as the newest Robin seeks out revenge.Since I like to give credit where credit is due: the action scenes are fairly well staged (though much more bloody than is necessary, which is something I'll come back to.) Jason O'Mara continues to do strong work as Batman. The characterization and voice work for Nightwing and Alfred are also good, though their roles in the story are fairly minor. Really though, that's about all that I can say nice about this. The biggest problem is Damian himself: he's simply not likable. He really embodies everything that drove fans to kill off Jason Todd back in the 1980s: he's cocky without having earned the right to be, he lacks any form of charm, he's precocious, and he does nothing but argue with every single person in his life regardless of whether they are trying to help or hurt him. Having talked to some folks who read the comics, the impression I get is that there Damian was disliked at first but fans grew to like him over time. That's fine on the page, but when these films are kept to a lean 75 minutes there just isn't time for audiences to warm to this kid.Though he's the biggest problem, Damian is far from the only one. I mentioned the violence already. It's not the fact that people are killed, but rather the bloody fashion in which it happens that feels gratuitous. It might not be such a problem, except that if the film is aiming for a more "realistic" portrayal of violence then it shouldn't go from bloody to cartoonish from beat to beat. Example: faceless assassins are gunned down left and right while Ra's al Ghul deflects bullets with a sword, and later on a character has his wrist pinned to the wall by a knife, but suffers no ill effects from that wound once he's free of it. Talia is also a victim of gratuitousness, though the sexual kind in this case. She has an outfit with a neckline that plunges down to her navel. Not only does this fly in the face of combat practicality and the laws of gravity (regarding her boobs appearing so lifted,) but it's 100% unnecessary since Morena Baccarin is able to deliver an edge of sexuality with just her voice and that would have been enough.Even Batman himself is out of whack in this movie. He admonishes Damian over lethal force (which really feels like a lost cause since one of the first things we see this kid do is shoot somebody in the head,) specifically he berates the kid for the use of a sword. However it's only a matter of minutes later that Batman himself detonates explosives and collapses a ceiling onto a group of mutated henchmen. And then there's Deathstroke, and this one I'm just going to blame the actor. The character's written decently enough but Thomas Gibson didn't give a single line reading that worked. Every word he spoke was flat and disconnected and just killed a visually intimidating character.Coming on the heels of the already flawed (though not this badly) "Justice League: War," this just kills my enthusiasm for the films based off of stories taken from the New 52 line of comics.
bbickley13-921-58664 It's interesting that this installment of the DC animated films is called Son of Batman and it stars a ten year old Robin, yet it's the most adult of these movies I ever seen.Adapting the origin of Damian Wayne from the comics, Deathstoke (who was not evolved with this in the comics)unleashes his plot to take over the league of assassins, killing Ra Al Ghul in the process, and putting his daughter Talia on the run, forcing her to unite her son, Damian with his biological dad, Batman. The character deign was pretty good. Batman's costume was pretty cool as well as Nightwing's who made an appearance. I really like the design of Killer Croc who makes an appearance in the movie as well. The story was pretty cool too. They did not let up just because Robin is only ten. The film is dark and Damian is as dark as he is in the comic books. They did not get that wrong. I feel there was a misstep in Batman, however, but Robin and his relationship with Nightwing was close to the comics. The animation was mediocre. It seemed that they were trying to make the whole thing gritty and more down to earth, realistic, which I'm not a fan of. It's animation, you can make it big and sir real. If they wanted to make it real than they should have made it live action (which would have made this movie a 10) The voice direction was pretty lame as well. I was into Jason 0'Mara as Batman for a second, but his silent but deadly Batman turned out not so good. He was just one of many voices that just did not seem to click together. I'm sure every animated movie has the voice acting done all separately mouths apart, but it's not suppose to sound that way and this movie does. I think it's another fault of the animation (possibly the music as well)Overall, the people over at Warner Bros animation have done it again with another excellent straight-to-DVD DC animated feature.
