adonis98-743-186503 Sinister is a movie starring Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, and James Ransone. Washed-up true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt finds a box of super 8 home movies that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose work dates back to the 1960s. Just like with Insidious and The Conjuring Sinister adapts a new Era of great horror films and boy is it creepy? The film builts an amazing atmosphere of terror that benefits from a terrific perfomance from Ethan Hawke plus the ending comes from where you didn't expect it to come and it's really creepy and just terrifying as for that entity it looked pretty damn scary to begin with trust me. (10/10)
DerekB I remember desperately wanting to see Sinister when it first came out in theaters, but I was still fairly young at the time, so I put it on the back-burner until recently when I decided to finally give it a watch. Maybe it was because of my high hopes or incredible trailers that left me feeling like it could have been much more.Sinister does a lot right. The visual and audio presentation in top-notch, and the acting from all the adult actors is dramatic and convincing. You can really see that a lot of care and effort was put into each frame. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that at least the idea behind the plot is fantastic, and the pacing of the story-telling is excellent. There are only a few actual problems I have with Sinister, but sadly they happen to be very prominent issues. It's hard to criticize child actors, but when the plot revolves so much around children, having sub-par acting from the children really hurts the atmosphere. My other big issue that really detracted from the overall experience is the ending. As fitting as it is, it lacks the creativity seen in earlier parts of the movie. In the end, I really do feel like I can recommend Sinister. Just don't go in thinking it'll be some kind of cinematic masterpiece.
Michael Ledo This film is a watered down version of the hand held camera genre. In instances where they didn't use home video footage, they filmed the scene bad enough to make it feel like found footage. The movie opens showing us a family being hung in their back yard. True crime author Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves into the same house with the intention of investigating the gruesome killing and writing about it. The locals are not warm to the idea, but we don't see any incidences due to budget constraints. Ellison doesn't inform his family they are in the same house that the killings took place. In the attic, Ellison discovers a horde of super 8 movies (some that have their own sound track, or so it seems) of the killing he is investigating as well as other killings that date back to the 1960's. He asks the questions, "Who is filming this?" and "Why?" and "Where is Stephanie?" She was the daughter of the family that was hung. They never found her.Ellison begins to investigate the other cases as weird things start to happen in the home. As usual it starts out slow and escalates.I liked the concept of the film more than its amateurish execution. Ellison drinks rather heavily which makes for an alternate explanation of his "hallucinations." The film would have been better if it had lead us in that direction, rather than just discuss it. Those who enjoy the "Paranormal" type movies should find a friend in this film. I loved the film in the beginning, but then it slowly wanes. Thumb rule: When you think demons are in your house, turn on the lights.Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex. or nudity. Snuff films. . Should scare the kids during a sleepover at Trent Raznor's house.
