SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
yoel marson I have always been a fan of Steve Martin so gave this a viewing and was greatly disappointed. Am really surprised these got such high ratings; maybe I am missing something. As a man I can only guess what would attract a younger girl to an older man. Perhaps it is the worldliness, wisdom and knowledge of art that attracted Lee to Frederick in "Hannah & Her Sisters"; Tom Cruise and George Clooney are already in their 50s and still have their looks as did Robert Redford in "Indecent Proposal"; Steve Martin in his previous persona's was carefree, youthful, immature and hilariously funny.Ray had none of these things. Looks, worldliness, charm. Only money. In fact the entire relationship was built around an exchange of gifts and money for sex. Typical dialogue included "Do you want to see my house?" or "Do you want to come with me to New York?". But who can wrong him; he was honest from the start that he was not interested in a long term relationship, only a casual one in return for gloves, restaurant visits and a student loan payoff. At best what differentiate her from the Bridgette Wilson character was not knowingly gold digging. As expensive as his San Francisco home must be, it was hardly an exotic location that would sweep a woman off her feet nor was the takeaway and wine dinner. In some way I feel that Martin's lovable history meant that viewers gave him the benefit of the doubt for a good 20-30mins into the film; without that, he would have seen a like a predatory stalker from the go.
richieandsam SHOPGIRL.I had never heard of this movie before I saw it on TV. Normally I would not go out of my way to see dramas... don't get me wrong, I like all kinds of genres of film... but dramas are not at the top of my list. The reason I watched this was because I saw it had Steve Martin in it... I love Steve Martin... the man is a legend! This movie was OK. It was not brilliant but it was entertaining. The story was OK. It was about a lonely girl named Mirabelle, who works behind the counter in a shop. She meets a guy named Jeremy in a laundrette and they go out a couple of times until she meets millionaire Ray at her shop who asks her out... she then leaves Jeremy to start a physical relation with Ray. Ray has commitment issues and Mirabelle has to choose whether to stay with Ray knowing there may never be love in the relationship, or be with Jeremy who is basically a bum but does love her.I have to say that the casting for this film was perfect... I was never a big fan of Claire Danes, but she was brilliant in this.My favourite character in this movie was Jeremy played by Jason Schwartzman... Jason was absolutely brilliant. He made me laugh so much in this film. Jeremy is such a weird guy and comes out with such random quotes... but they were awesome! I love this guy!And then you have Ray... played by the legend that is Steve Martin. He played the part really well... I actually felt sorry for him.I will give this film 6 out of 10.The story was average, but the cast and characters were perfect. For more of my reviews, please check out my Facebook page:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ordinary-Person-Movie- Reviews/456572047728204?ref=hl
Desertman84 Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and served as co-producer for this screen adaptation of his short novel,Shopgirl. It takes a witty but bittersweet look at a salesgirl that falls in love with two men from different walks of life.It stars Claire Danes,Steve Martin,Jason Schwartzman together with Bridgette Wilson-Sampras,Sam Bottoms, Frances Conroy,Rebecca Pidgeon and Samantha Shelton. It was directed by Anand Tucker.Mirabelle Buttersfield is an aspiring artist in her mid-twenties who, after graduating from college, moved to Los Angeles, where she works at the glove counter of an upscale department store. Mirabelle's job is simple and not demanding, but it doesn't pay especially well, and she finds herself struggling to get out from under a growing mountain of debt from student loans and credit cards. One night, while doing her laundry, Mirabelle meets Jeremy, a scruffy but likable would-be musician who makes ends meet selling guitar amps. While Jeremy is obviously infatuated with Mirabelle, she isn't sure how she feels about him, especially after she meets Ray Porter, a man in his fifties whom she meets at the store. Ray is independently wealthy, intelligent, and charming, and after asking her out on a date he sweeps her off her feet. However, while Mirabelle quickly falls for Ray and he's generous to a fault with her, he refuses to commit exclusively to her and suggests they should both see other people, a prospect that no longer holds much appeal for her. This is a slim, charming, romantic story, full of intentionally mild humor about strong themes such as passion, commitment and loneliness. The performances especially with the sheer charm of Claire Danes' performance, combined with the convincingly resigned sadness of Steve Martin and the intense sincerity of the singularly uncharacteristic Jason Schwartzman, make this a deeply bittersweet film experience.Although it is labeled a romantic comedy, it is more of a coming-of-age drama which makes it a must-see.
Andie Katschthaler Three things:1. If you expect typical Steve Martin, don't watch this. 2. If you expect typical Claire Danes, probably don't watch this either.3. If you want an excellent quiet film about loneliness and human connection, then go ahead. The poster is misleading, I think. It is too glossy and too focused on the triangle. It would lead you to expect a different film, so in the beginning I was a bit puzzled as to where this was heading. But once I went with the weird it just got better and better. In my opinion it's not so much about the love triangle as it is about the loneliness of three different people and how they're trying to connect/avoid connecting. It's not some big dramatic chase after the girl but the drama happens WITHIN the characters: her depression, his inability to connect, her unrequited love. While Steve Martin's usual roles do have the tragedy underneath the comedy this one comes without the top veneer of fun. It's refreshing! And Martin is actually fantastic in this, touching, heartbreakingly lost and lonely. It is such a joy seeing him playing a serious character. And in fact, the only truly tragic character in this movie. Danes and Schwartzman end up making a connection, he never really does until it's too late. My only problem with the movie was Jason Schwartzman's character: He does bring some comedy/levity into it but his cluelessness is almost too cringe-worthy at times. I mostly felt embarrassed for him. Hence only 9 out of 10 stars from me.
