if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.

This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows

I clearly just don't get PTA. Boogie Nights was kind of alright, but this is another one of his that just makes me go "Huh?" If PTA was going for a magic realist vibe, the tone is completely inconsistent. Are we supposed to laugh at the main character or empathise with him? What does Emily Watson's character see in him? How does Sandler's business afford so many staff? None of these questions are remotely addressed by the film and so it's a disappointment from start to finish.

Punch-drunk love is really good. It's flawless. From the great acting, great cinematography, great dialogue, and an unexpectedly great score. There are plenty of subtle moments in the film. For example the clothes of the characters perfectly reflect their character. Adam Sandler's character wears a blue suit, representing his current state of depression which he would like to keep a secret, while Emily Watson's character has a red dress, which represents an inner anger and rage from previous failed attempts at love, that Adam Sandler constantly tries to acquire for the whole film. Everything in this film is done so great. This film's score made this movie feel like a musical. It's amazing. Everyone needs to at least watch the film once. Paul Thomas Anderson is one the best directors currently working

My favorite film of all time. I saw this movie back in high school and it has only grown in my mind since. Every time I watch it I notice new layers. Such a beautiful movie about how, now matter who you are or how strange you may feel, there is always someone out there for you. No matter how doubtful or weak you may feel now, when you find the person you love, you will be filled with an inner strength you never knew you had. I made sure to pick up the Criterion blu-ray the day it was released and it was like seeing an entirely different movie. Just small moments of physical comedy happening in the background add so much to the whimsy and charm of this movie. If only Adam Sandler wasn't so desperate of populism, he could be doing interesting character work like this.
