edwardcooper-92204 Open Water is shot in an almost documentary style and with two part-time actors. Do not let these facts deter you from catching this movie wherever you can. The film is based on a true story about two scuba divers(couple) who happen to get left behind by their tour boats in shark infested waters. You know the ending of the story but the lead up to it is an exercise in creating and maintaining tension. The film is also great for budding filmmakers on how to make a cheap but good film- this was made for a mere 120,000 dollars. Do not miss it, even if you have a fear of sharks.

tdrish That's correct. I talked to a lot of people about this movie. Some thought it was a good movie, but they still did not admit to liking it. Some say they hated it, even though they admitted it was a good movie. So what did I think of it? Well...I, too, thought it was a good movie. It was crafted well, with realism exploding off the charts. I do regret to tell you, however, despite this being a well made film, I did not like it enough to add it to any of my favorites. It was based on a true story, I get it, and nobody would dream in a million years that everything will end the way the movie ended. All I kept thinking, and think to this day, is "You idiots! If you would have stayed with the boat, none of this would have happened to you!" There was no accident, they voluntarily went off yonder on their own, and the boat left, thinking that everyone was accounted for. All but two. All but one, likable couple, stranded out in open water with the blood thirsty sharks. The film does an excellent job of giving you the feel that you are really out there with them, and the frightening feeling of expecting the unexpected from below the waters. It was well made, hands down. However, I cannot go around recommending this to any of my family or friends. I wouldn't even recommend my enemies to watch this. I did think everything was spot on, and everything passed with flying colors, but there is just an "off" feeling about it all, and I can't put my finger on why. It's just one of those rare movies where you feel you were not let down, but you didn't like what you saw either, and apparently others agree, or this would have had a higher rating. Great job from the lead actor and actress, and a great job from the director, but let's face it: Nobody wants to be put in these kind of situations. So why would any one want to watch it?

Syo Kennex People thought this was a good movie?Sorry to say but all these positive reviews, in my opinion, as false advertising. Never have I been as bored through a movie. Never in my life. We have two people trapped in the middle of the ocean, talking to each other, and that's it. The plot? "Two scuba drivers are trapped in the ocean, surrounded by blood thirsty sharks." I'm sorry? Nothing shark related happened until 40 minutes into this hour and 19 minute movie. Nothing happened of actual excitement until an hour into the movie. The ending was nothing special and answered no questions whatsoever. Based on the true story this is based off, I guess that neither of them survive. The only reason I continued to watch this were the beautiful cinematography shots and that's the only reason this got three stars from me. If it was movie alone, this would be a 0-1 star straight away. This entire movie is just close ups of them bobbing along in the ocean, occasionally crying or sometimes they have some actual drama or someone yelling in pain at something that no one can actually see. The entire dialogue was weak, and the outburst of one of the characters just made me roll my eyes. The acting in this was poor, and I have never seen such horrible characters on screen before. They were dull, completely one dimensional and had nothing to them that made me like them, nor feel like these could be real people. Considering this was based off of the true story of Tom and Eileen Lonergan in 1998, the characters should have felt like real people."This movie was supposed to be suspenseful!" Well the movie creators were absolutely terrible at creating that suspense. If this had been done in a short, then maybe it would have worked better. But the continuous same frames and constant characters in the water just got boring. The suspense was good at first, when they're looking for the boat at the start of the movie (anyone else notice they were in the shadow of the camera boat when looking for it?) but after that it just slowly dissipated into boredom. There was barely any suspense after this. When we have the scene at night, the suspense begins to grow, but then we don't get to see anything at all and it just becomes audio boredom instead.Overall, this movie was a massive fail. It could have been so much better and so much more interesting. It has so much promise, but it's just… pathetic. It was an hour and 19 minutes, and I felt like it took me three or four hours to get through this. I really regret watching this and I definitely will not be watching Open Water 2: Adrift.

userwithnoname People were affected very differently by this movie. I first watched this more than a decade ago and didn't think much of it then. It had a shaky camera, true story, Blair Witch-vibe which was very popular at the time. I knew it was going for realism, but it never went beyond that. Now my life is different. I have a job and take regular vacations and adventure activities. Watching it again, i realised this was one terrifying and intense movie. Much of the horror comes from the straight forward, simplistic realism. No story is being told here, unlike its sequel Adrift (which i also like btw....just me, i have a thing for watery movies). There is no moral, no cinematography. Just straight forward representation of events. They call this a psychological horror, and it really is. The horror comes from your personal experience of the world and how much you can relate. Even if you don't dive, we all have experienced when things go wrong, when a fun activity takes a horrible turn, when the simplest becomes complicated, when the most unlikely takes place and only a second to unfold. Nothing was inherently scary in this movie. They were only stranded for a few hours, and even when the film finishes, it was only one night (humans can go for days without food or water). The sharks weren't big. The one that bit Daniel was possibly smaller than him. This was no monster movie. However, their situation was serious, dire and hopeless from the beginning, because of the unique circumstance. They were virtually impossible to find and after 7 hours, i was surprised they didn't freak out at the hopelessness of the situation as i would have. The worse for me wasn't the shark bite or one night drifting in pitch black stormy oceans but instead the realisation that there was no hope and no respite.
