Bereamic Awesome Movie
Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Portia Hilton Blistering performances.
krocheav A dreary extravaganza that only the Academy (and like minded) could fall for. Overlong and over everything - saddled with some of the most forgettable songs in a long memory. Why waste so much talent on so little substance? Looking at the box office returns the public must have smelled a BOMB or word-of-mouth headed them off at the pass...before they sacrificed their time and money. Disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, would have liked being involved with this debauched debacle especially if they let him anywhere near the casting sessions!. Director Rob Marshal tried for another attempt at the success of "Chicago" but came unstuck BIG time. The movies this farce is based on, belong to those groups of pretentious works that were carefully groomed as 'products' - to be promoted as 'art' - along with a group of artists the informed public had little time for - till, the world 'Money Machine' got behind them and made it impossible not to notice them. From there, it became very difficult for honest critics to speak out against them for fear of being ostracized by the 'in-crowd'. Some will enjoy this movie, many more won't.
PWNYCNY This is a great movie. The story, music, acting and choreography are excellent. The musical numbers are beautifully staged and performed by extraordinarily talented actors, most of whom are not known as singers and dancers. The story is about a movie director who is in an emotional tailspin which is affecting his ability to create. Unless he is able to bring order to his personal life, his future is bleak. The movie shows how the creative artist can alienate others as he strives to involve them in his projects. He comes across as being selfish and manipulative when actually he intends no harm. Hence, he sends out mixed messages which confuse and frustrate others and leads to wires being crossed. The entire cast is excellent. Daniel Day-Lewis gives a powerful and convincing performance as an Italian director. The other cast members, which include Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren, are spectacular and, not surprisingly, incredibly beautiful. This movie is proof that when it wants to, Hollywood can still make high-quality musicals.
roguehands I admit that I had never expected to be a fan of musical films (probably just because I hadn't even seen any, sseeeshh). Even so, I understand that we can't really expect much from what a musical film has to offer if compared with the real on-stage musicals, just like how the world inside a book will always beat the movie version. But i guess that's what surprised me when i finally watched this film. OK,I obviously know nothing about whatever original version of this musical, but what i gathered from watching this film is that i completely felt like i was watching a frikkin musical on a frikkin stage for the whole duration. Nine doesn't just offer a half-assed effort to create a 'daily-life-like' singing where people just suddenly feel like expressing their feelings through songs on the gd street. No, they don't bother with that. Instead, they present you the whole package by dragging in the stage, lighting, and the goddamn ambiance. It left you stunned a few minutes after the song is over as it gets back into the story, but that's what makes it a fun ride; it drags you along into the euphoria and misery that the characters sing about, and all of those while you're feeling like being there in the stage with them. Nine gives you an experience of both classic musical enjoyment AND modern cinematography.Seriously? with all the amazing actresses who starred in it and their spectacular solo stages, i couldn't stand other musical films afterwards because they all seem too bland compared to this one. but i guess it's just a matter of different taste after all.
SnoopyStyle Film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) is starting a new movie in 10 days and he hasn't written a single word yet. He doesn't know if he still has the touch after 2 consecutive flops. All that is sure is that the new movie is to be called Italia and stars his muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman). The story isn't very appealing. It's just so much doubt and mid-life crisis from Guido. The songs are, to be kind, weak cabaret Broadway caliber. Penélope Cruz does a super sexy dance. Daniel Day-Lewis isn't completely horrible. Kate Hudson has the most fun and energetic. And Marion Cotillard gets very emotional. Besides a few sexy dance moves, the songs and dances are mostly forgettable. And there is something very static about having all those performances on the same stage. There are some hot babes, but the movie isn't so hot.
