Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Hattie I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Gary The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
Shawn Spencer I love Westerns. The best ones (Naked Spur, The Searchers, Ride the High Country, Shane, etc.) told gritty tales of struggle and hardship, of man at war with nature, evil and himself. They are not alabaster saints, they are real people struggling with real temptation and real failures, but in the end they are redemption stories of people making amends and saving others from their mistakes. In "Lonesome Dove", however, the message is different: Life Stinks and Then You Die.8 hours of talk, talk, talk with no point but vanity and stupidity will get you killed. If that's news to anyone, just surf the internet for five minutes, it'll save you wasting a lot of time.
dminkster This is a wonderful snapshot of the old West. I have no idea if it's true to life, but it seems as if it is, and that's all that matters. Wonderful writing, and the actors jump on it to flesh out terrific characters. The crusty Robert Duvall, the steely self denying Tommy Lee, the empathetic Danny Glover, Cocky Robert Urich, gawky Robbie Benson, and then Anjelica Houston, Diane Ladd, Frederic Forrest as the hateful Blue Duck, and some really wonderful supporting performances and great, aged , weathered faces. It's funny, moving, awe inspiring in it's epic geography, and very moving as well. I have the tape but need to upgrade to DVD, although I just watched it on AMC. Then, sadly, I watched the sequel the next night. I strongly suggest you skip the sequel which has nothing that was part of the original. Some bad writing, curious casting and indifferent performances are all part of this bad attempt to recapture the magic of the original.
ShelbyTMItchell A lot of Westerns are out of date these days. But this is an exception. Due not just to the star power headed by Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. As both are the lead characters. With the support from Rick Schroder, Danny Glover, Angelica Houston, Diane Lane, Robert Urich, etc. As they face lots of adversity and lots of casualties due to the fact, of moving the cattle of Duvall's and Jones from the South to Montana for a better life.It has a great a script and a great acting along the way. For four nights. It also spawned two sequels in the process. It turned into a ratings blockbuster for CBS when it aired originally in 1989.We now have the tapes to the mini series! You will not be disappointed.
rsimanski About 10 years have passed since most of the other reviews were written, and if anything, the quality of Lonesome Dove in relation to even the best of the miniseries shown on television today is painfully obvious. Lonesome Dove is simply one of the best of all times. Even the high-quality HBO productions pale in comparison. I agree with the reviewer who wrote that it should be ranked with the greatest theatrical Westerns, such as The Searchers and Red River. What more could any fan of Westerns ask for? It's a great story. The film features several great actors, such as Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Danny Glover, and Angelica Huston, in their prime, with an excellent supporting cast. The cinematography is stunning, the music deservedly won a major award, and the production values are closer to those of a good theatrical film than to a typical made-for-TV movie.I bought a poor-quality DVD release of LD seven or eight years go. Fortunately, Lonesome Dove is available on Netflix streaming video in a high-definition, wide-screen version. I recommend it highly.
