Megamind To all those who have watched it: I hope you enjoyed it as much as I do.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
Kimball Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
lyndseyjill-64624 I saw this movie on Netflix and decided to give it a try. I didn't think I'd get into as much as I did. Viola Davis did a very beautiful job in portraying her emotions, and I really never saw the "twist" coming. Sure it's a bit far fetched, one women taking down some very dangerous criminals, but all in all I'm happy I watched it.
loevw It's a touching and dramatic theme, and for that alone it has some merit and will appeal to some more than others. The movie feels a bit slow in the beginning, with the heavy drama, until it picks up about 40 minutes into it. Once I've made it that far, I became more interested and of course wanted to see how it ended. There was also a surprise that caught me off guard. Not the movie I'd save for the weekend, but it was satisfactory to watch overall. I thought that Viola and Jennifer did a good job.One thing that the movie didn't do so well is the relationship between characters. Of course it's expected that the focus should be on the mother, but their interactions with others would have more depth if they developed the other characters a bit more.
TxMike I found this on Netflix streaming, my wife viewed the trailer and decided it was "too dark" for what she wanted to watch so I watched it alone.I can't say too much before the SPOILERS section below, but it is in Atlanta mostly in an area where lots of drug dealing goes on at night on the street corners. One night a teenage boy is walking home and was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. Was he the target, or was he just in the wrong place? The police have a number of these to investigate and seem to be bogged down. Meanwhile the grieving mother, Lila, goes to support group meetings where she and other mothers offer each other support. But Eve catches her eye after one meeting, and together they devise a different plan, one to track down and eliminate the drug boss who is responsible for the killings. There are some shootings but never are they sensationalized. Yes the story is dark but we can identify with the characters. Jennifer Lopez gets a lot of criticism from some quarters but she in fact is a fine actress and is good as Eve. Viola Davis is Lila and as always gives a great performance.SPOILERS follow: In a theme borrowed from 'Fight Club', Eve is in fact not real, only the alter ego of Lila. A common shot is to have Eve right behind a hesitant Lila, egging her on to do what needs to be done. While Lila is non-violent and cringes when she finds a handgun in her son's backpack, Eve is ready to hunt down and kill the bad guys. In the end she succeeds and Eve disappears as Lila gains more confidence in her mission. The cops strongly suspect Lila in several murders but each woman in the support group start to come forward to say Lila was with them when the several killings occurred. It appears that she would never be charged and at least THAT drug boss is dead.
sddavis63 Ccertainly losing your child to murder would be an absolute nightmare for any parent. Who knows how we would handle it? And, of course, I for one don't want to ever be put in the position of finding out. This movie opens with the murder of Stephonn. His mother is Lila (Viola Davis) and the remainder of the movie basically follows her. We see her in a support group, we see the frustration she has to deal with as she tries to push the police department forward in their investigation. And we watch her growing relationship with Eve (Jennifer Lopez), whom she meets at the support group and who has recently lost her daughter to a murderer. Basically this ends up being a fairly typical revenge/vigilante movie. Lila wants justice for her son and since the police seem unable to get it she takes on the job of finding Stephonn's killer herself, egged on by Eve. Davis was decent in the role - portraying Lila as uncomfortable with the killing spree she eventually goes on as she follows the trail to her son's killer and yet unable to stop, so great is her grief and her desire for revenge. I couldn't really get a handle on Eve. Why would she have been so committed to encouraging Lila to seek out her son's killer and so willing to take part in the plan? Why wouldn't she have devoted herself to finding her daughter's killer? I didn't really understand that.In the end, while the movie touches on some valid points - the impact of grief, overworked police, etc., etc. - it really to me just seemed to descend to the level of any of probably dozens of vigilante movies that are out there. It didn't really stand out as particularly unique. Like most of these movies you can sympathize with the frustration felt by the one who turns vigilante, but this is really just one more among many similar movies, and I didn't fund anything in it that made it different. 4/10)
