Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.

Donald Seymour This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
grandmastersik Imagine that an amateur screenwriter shat out a vomit draft and said, "That's Oscar-worthy!" Well, that pretty much describes this mumbled action flick. In fairness, the script - or final cut - could have been messed up by anyone, so I won't blame the writer, but as an espionage-cum-action thriller, the film is a total dud.If you're a fan of Donnie Yen (like me!), you'll watch this regardless of how bad anyone tells you it is, and where the big fight at the end nets it an extra star, please don't let the 4/10 fool you into believing that this is half-way decent, because it really is one of the worst Donnie films I've sat through. Which is a shame, because Shu Qi looks as gorgeous as ever and really pours a lot of emotion into her role... which only further highlights how badly the final film lets down both of its main stars.
Paul Magne Haakonsen I bought "Legend of the Fist" from Amazon simply because Shu Qi was in it. But prior to that, then I had no idea what the movie was about, so it was without any hopes or expectations that I sat down to watch the movie."Legend of the Fist" was actually a rather good enough action/martial arts movie spiced up with a fairly good storyline as well. Set during World War I in a Japanese occupied Shanghai, we follow the oppression of the Chinese and their rise to rebel against the Japanese. Mostly by the hands on a single man; Chen Zhen. The action sequences and fight scenes in the movie were really great, nicely choreographed and executed, which is a trademark of Donnie Yen. So if you are familiar with his work, then you know you are in for some great action and lots of adrenaline here. However, the last fight was a bit too cliché for my liking, it was like an old Bruce Lee movie. You had Donnie Yen taking on a whole dojo of Japanese singlehandedly. Then he comes up against the 'villain', the main bad guy, and gets a nasty beating, but of course he comes back and beats the villain to a pulp. It was exactly like the old Bruce Lee movies, and it has been done too many times already, been there, done that. So it was sort of a anti-climatic end to the movie - as you saw it coming a mile away."Legend of the Fist" has some pretty good actors and actresses on the cast list; you have Donnie Yen (in the lead role of Chen Zhen), Shu Qi (playing Kiki) and Anthony Wong (playing Liu Yutian). And the people in the movie did great jobs in bringing their characters to life on the screen.Having seen "Legend of the Fist" now, I sit here with the taste of 'was this a tribute to Bruce Lee' in my mouth. Because everything in this movie screamed Bruce Lee, and it seemed like a movie that might as well have starred the immortal Bruce Lee and not Donnie Yen. And I will not even go into the similarity between the Masked Fighter and Bruce Lee's Kato character... But regardless of this being the case or not, then "Legend of the Fist" was actually good entertainment both story-wise and also action-wise.
nickyloi It was a roundabout way of being interested in this movie, essentially I had just seen "The Green Hornet" and while reading the trivia somehow got routed to the "Masked Warrior" as referenced in this movie. It's a movie that can't really find it's own identity - like the main character Chen Zhen, who maintains at least three different identities, the movie is trying to be too many things at once. It is trying to be a "Masked Superhero" movie (and somewhat marketed as such), a period martial arts movie, and a remake of a franchise. The last bit is sort of interesting, since I had no idea that there was a whole mythology behind it. Or even that this "sequel" is actually a continuation of a TV series that Donnie Yen did in the eighties, which in itself is a pretty interesting tidbit. I revisited the Bruce Lee version and the series finale, and to my surprise, they are very similar in certain key moments, which is a bit of a creative choice. The introduction is spectacular, being Donnie do what he does best, fight with a lighting fast ferocity that really bears no rival. From there the story holds up relatively well, though I really think there was no need to introduce a "superhero" element into the story since there was no real need to conceal his identity. All and all, a violent treat that ends a little predictably, especially if you're a fan of the series.
Angelus2 Chen Zhen returns from France to save his country from the Japanese, and takes on the role of a superhero. That's the basic plot. The film draws out the plot, and places numerous characters with different stories. The opening fight scene was quite spectacular, as Chen Zhen lays waste to his enemies and protects his friends with amazing kung-fu, but then it just goes downhill, the plot is perhaps the main problem and the actors fail to provide a decent performance. After watching Ip Man and the sequel, I expected Donnie to ascend the ranks of his fellow Martial Art movie stars, but instead he descends to a place far lower. The rest of the fight scenes are too fast and rely heavily on wires, therefore Donnie's true Kung-Fu potential is never seen.Sure, a tribute is wonderful to watch. But when you bring a legendary character back to life, you better get it right...Yen failed miserably. I loved the Ip Man films, and Dragon Tiger Gate; and envisioned Donnie as the saviour of Kung-fu movies..But something went wrong along the way.
