Synopsis

The story of the Arthurian legend, based on the 'Sarmatian hypothesis' which contends that the legend has a historical nucleus in the Sarmatian heavy cavalry troops stationed in Britain, and that the Roman-British military commander, Lucius Artorius Castus is the historical person behind the legend.

Konterr Brilliant and touching
Suman Roberson It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
Portia Hilton Blistering performances.
Kaelan Mccaffrey Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
cinemajesty Movie Review: "King Arthur" (2004)Running overly-ambitious with a 120-Million-Dollar production alongside a mixed freestyle-pop-culturing-script on English Mythology by Academy-Award-nominated screenwriter David Franzoni, when supreme Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer entrusts director Antoine Fuqua with a capable cast from leading actor Clive Owen in the title role as Arthur, inhabiting a great screen presence, but then again hardly finds decisive beats that will stick with any, presumingly a teenage boys intended target group, who even with a prestigious 4th of July "Independence Day" release in Summer of 2004, did not go for unimpressingly executed cut-down sword fights, yet remain high-standard received production values in art direction and costume design by Penny Rose, leaving me satisfied in an overall visual reception. But I stay nevertheless emotionally restraint with no awes giving but a few moments with actress Keira Knightley in a mesmerizing portrayal as the infamous sensual character of Guinevere, who as history says descended from a noble Roman family dynasty, abducted by an envious completely left-out character of "Maleagant" which just gets dramatically twisted in the best minutes of "King Arthur", when the "Guinevere" must get rescued from mud-striking, mist-atmosphere-indulging stagecoach imprisonment by Arthur strolling with his faithfully-follwoing no-conflicts-given knights, almost aimlessly through an unless beautifully-captured English countryside by cinematographer Slawomir Idziak in tints of green, earthy brown and hints of red wind-swaying fabrics as this movie fails to succeed by focusing on all-too simplified moments of late 5th century English history, when an invading tribe of "Saxons", led by unfortunately misdirected in brute force, no-virtues sharing character of Cerdic, here portrayed by unless always ready-to-amaze actor Stellan Skarsgard, left utterly alone by director Antoine Fuqua in heavy rag ice-age defying costume with somehow misplaced vikings-recalling heavy bread.Production designer Dan Weil and composer Hans Zimmer do their best to elevate this disappointment of an event movie, wasting countless cast members in badly staggato cut editorial of 120 Minutes, including Ian Gruffudd as Lancelot, Mads Mikkelsen as Tristan, Joel Edgerton as Gawain, Ray Stevenson, Ray Winstone and Stephen Millane as behind expectation portrayal of famous wizard Merlin, when only Guy Ritchie's highly-underrated take on King Arthur's myth "The Legend of the Sword" starring Jude Law and 36-year-old Charlie Hunnam as "Arthur", premiering at Waner Bros. Studio owned Hollywood location in again misunderstood marketing efforts by another Hollywood major after Disney Enterprises' affiliate Touchstone Pictures confronting a troublesome recurring cinematic remaining magical character theme of a historic king figure with Hollywood going down into its knees at least for a day on May 8th 2017 to recoup some solace on a haunted "King Arthur" story with no major world audiences given approval to let at least director Guy Ritchie's version of an "King Arthur" movie become a motion picture classic in time.Copyright 2018 Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC
spam_ebay_al Well, First, the positive. Overall good acting, and not bad as movie, could have got happily twice the stars. So, why did I not give more ? Some elements are correct, e.g. the "tabula" with wax and the stilus (yep, the stylus was not invented with tablet computers :-)), but form a film that at the start pretends to be a true accurate historical reconstruction... Well, another comment made a list of 7 points historically wrong (though making some reference that could itself be disputable, e.g. Picts are in general considered part of the vast Celtic family), in reality, the list can be much longer, but just two examples... The Sarmatians were known for their cavalry, but it was heavy cavalry more similar to the "knights" (though not with the same type of rigid armor) than to what shown in the movies. Also, the "vallum" (by the way, that is the origin of the word "wall" ), to be historically accurate, should have shown the ditches etc. (effectively, a "vallum" was more than just a wall). And while it is true that in ancient time having hostages and tributes including slaves was not unheard of, the mechanism shown in the movie about enlisting in the Roman army is completely wrong. Is Hollywood famous for its historical accuracy (thus is this film really such a bad exception) ? Definitively NOT, and many times it goes straight into "propaganda" - that why some movies use the non committal (lawyer approved ;-)) "inspired by true events" ("inspired"). Again, the problem is that it that pretense at the start to be "THE" historical reconstruction. To enjoy some time, and see a different reinterpretation on the "Arthurian cycle", it's one thing, but do NOT pretend after seeing this movie that you know the story of "true Arthur", or the story or situation of the Europe, the Roman empire, or England in that period, because you will not.
leplatypus In short, prefer « Excalibur » than this poor crap : sure the production is well done and the landscapes, winter, mineral colors really pulse the Celtic soul. Sure it's interesting to have historical facts between Romans, Saxons, Britons and Samartians ( ?) and i appreciate the efforts to do realistic and timely furniture ! But i don't have this western mind anymore to indulge into the heroics of the courageous leader and his blind followers all killing for liberty ! I'm just fed up with this soup history we are forced to gulp : spilling blood, raping women, making orphans can't come from a truly human inspiring figure. Sure, once you kill every one to dissent, you have every body agree ! Besides this, the movie shows terrible flaws : to start with the movie with the knights and not Arthur is stupidly forgetting just the core of the movie (remember its title ?), Keira has a warrior is a sad sight and the poor Skarsgard still pollutes my movie with his lack of anything that made him here a really pitiful villain! RUS!
KalKenobi83 Watched King Arthur Feauturing Clive Owen(Closer) as Arthur ,Ioan Gruffudd(Titanic) as Lancelot ,Joel Egerton(Star Wars:Attack Of The Clones) as Gawain , Ray Winstone(Cold Mountain) as Bors The Younger ,Hugh Dancy(Tempo) as Galahad , Ray Stevenson(Serenity) as Dagonet , Mads Mikkelson(Rejseholdet) as Tristan , Kiera Knightley(Pirates Of The Carribbean:Curse Of The Black Pearl ) As Guinevere ,Stephen Dillane(Hamlet) as Merlin ,Stellan Skarsgard(Good Will Hunting) as Cedric , While film had a solid cast and acting it was disappointing to see the Legend Of King Arthur as part of the Rome when it really was set in middle ages though it did manage to save itself somewhat with some of the best sword fights and action.Fantastic Cinematography by Slawomir Idziak(Black Hawk Down), Production Design By Paul Cross(B.U.S.T.E.D) Costume Design By Penny Rose(Mission:Impossible) ,Amazing Writing By David Franzoni(Gladiator) , Amazing Score from Hans Zimmer(The Last Samurai) and Direction By Antoine Fuqa(Training Day) An OK Retelling of The Legend of King Arthur 7/10
