Wordiezett So much average
SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
tbills2 I Heart Huckabees would be better off if it - were more funny and less depressed - were more considerate and less self-centered - paced itself better and loitered less - were more existentially heartfelt and less fussy and dramatic - had more Jessica Lange bathing suit stills - were lighter and less heavy - had more visual aid and less talky talky - were more inspirational and not so stuck in its own head - had more Isabelle Huppert character and less Dustin Hoffman Lily Tomlin characters - were more like it is when Mark Wahlberg and Jude Law are onscreen and everybody's talking over each other being existential-like - were more amusing and less grief-stricken - were fuller of life and less empty feeling - were more appreciative and less critical and so would I. I love I Heart Huckabees. It's an awesome movie and it's pretty hilarious and really good. David O. Russell's best work.(The meaning of life definitely has something to do with the feeling Shania gives blonde-haired Jude when he's telling people his Shania tuna fish story, or the feeling Naomi gives me when I see her posing bent over in her little baby blue shorts and sky blue top shooting her Huckabees commercial. Oh thank you sweet creator. Or something like that.)
Michaela Palin Oh, dear. Where do I start. I was ready to be entertained. One would have the reasonable expectation that when a movie has a fine cast, there would be some measure of entertainment to be had. Unfortunately, I was mistaken.I found I Heart Huckabees to be utterly dry and dull, and completely and utterly tedious. Incredibly unfunny. The dialogue was the opposite of witty or clever. There wasn't an interesting line in the movie. Poorly scripted. Incredibly unstimulating. I found it to be quite a badly made movie. I was very determined to see it through to the end in order to see if this dodgy movie redeemed itself in any way whatsoever. No, it didn't. What a dreadful balls-up of a film. There are bad movies, and then there are BAD movies. Some bad movies are so bad that they're actually good, such the Nicolas Cage version of The Wicker Man. That movie is so bad that it's hilarious. I Heart Huckabees is NOT like that. I Heart Huckabees is just plain bad. It should never have been made. One of the worst movies I've sat through in my life. The experience of watching it verged on painful. I'm going to donate the DVD to the charity shop. Or perhaps just throw it away so that I won't be responsible for making someone else watch that awful movie.
Dynospasm I decided three quarters of the way through this movie that I was going to review it. I also decided that I wasn't gong to read anyone else's reviews before I did. Half way through and I was already mentally punishing myself for not having a guaranteed definition of what was going on. Being a Sociology graduate I felt like I was letting myself down by not having a concrete definition. I decided to write the review when it clicked; this movie is entirely based on the confusion I felt, and the malleable concept of the existential thought process that fueled it. If you are to consider such a thing as existentialism, then you must first accept that your consideration will be either utterly pointless, or infinitely meaningful given the universal pointlessness of the world that it exists within. Which really brings you to the crux of the matter...or not. Two sides of the same coin land edgewise up and gently ridicule the very concept of flipping it in the first place, and the idea that there can be two conflicting arguments within such an ideology becomes absurd. We are all connected so everything matters, or we are all disconnected so nothing does, which means that if nothing matters, then everything does, and if everything matters, then nothing does. As I walked around my house after watching it, I found myself in a positive state of mind, and I felt a new fondness for my surroundings that had been absent for a few months. I have no conscious idea why this was the case, but if a movie can have that effect on you, then something's gone right.
rzajac Is it pretentious? Is it deep? I wouldn't worry so much about that. You can rest in the assurance that, if you watch Huckabees, while taking the script and direction at face value, my lips are sealed.I enjoyed the challenge to open up and see if the flow of mystico-philisophico ideation could work hand-in-hand with the direction and general production values to create a cogent experience. And I think it does, in part because there's a wonderful looseness and, for all the "big" talk, an actual sense of humor and self-deprecation that invites you to not get hung up on Huckabees pretensions to weightiness. And that's a rare and amazing thing. Also, there's an aesthetic here that's a mix of embarrassment-of-riches and garage-sale. And the upshot of that is that you ought to be able to have at least a couple of "a-ha" moments that make the waiting worthwhile. I know I did! *More* than a couple. Not much to comment on beyond these things, since the production values were all in order and sewn up tight. I will add that lately I've been paying more attention to incidental music, and was occasionally sweetly stunned by the warm flow of playful lite-pop ensemble work in Huckabees: It seemed to remind that, while the mill of God doth grind exceeding fine, it also produces some cool music. So: Check it out.
