Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Suman Roberson It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
PimpinAinttEasy A melancholic drama with elements of a gangster heist film. If you're looking for a procedural heist flick like CRISS CROSS, forget about this movie. This is a character study of ageing gangster mad dog roy earle (bogart) and an account of his life after he is released from jail. roy wants to settle down in an Indiana farm. There are even two girls vying for his attention. All he has to do is make one last heist, which he owes to his old boss. A rather schmaltzy sub plot about a handicapped girl takes something out of the film. It was not the best way to show roy's bourgeoisie aspirations. I dont think the makers realized the film's full potential. But the relationship between roy and the marie (ida lupino), the damsel in distress is one of the film's highlights.Ida Lupino is not the most beautiful actress of the 1940s and 50s. But she is that special woman who most men end up longing for if she were in a room full of beautiful bimbos. There is something very bewitching about her. This must be one of Bogart's best performances as mad dog earle, tough on the outside, but inside he longs for a normal life on a farm.I liked the grand vistas which was the backdrop for the final car chase.(7.5/10)
jb_campo High Sierra tells the story of a gangster with a heart who has a chance and a desire to change. But can he really? Bogey gives a great performance as Roy Earle, who is let out of prison by his old boss, only to be signed up for the biggest event that will finally allow him to retire from his life of crime. He meets Ida Lupino, beautiful talented actress, who plays Marie, a down and outer, street-smart girl who has led a dubious life. Then he meets Velma, a sweet, unspoiled girl, who he is drawn to. Velma's father is played by that actor who played Clarence the angel in It's a Wonderful Life, and he was terrific too.The script is tight, and the dialog even better. Not much wasted dialog here, as Bogey was always one of the most economical actors ever. Will he find true love, will he be able to break out? Watch this gem to find out. You will love High Sierra.
kennethfrankel The movie mentions that the dog belonging to Earl is named "Pard". They seem to imply that it is a strange name. In "The Virginian" (1914), a silent film, they use "Pard" to mean "Partner". Since this is set in the West, it may have been a common term in the past. Sorry, I need 10 lines. There seems no way to avoid getting trapped on the big mountain. It also would seem that the girlfriend, played by Lupino, would be charged today with aiding a criminal. There are several ways that could phrased. It is a shame that the 2 leads did not appear together again. Being trapped up there with no food or water, and no warm clothes at altitude could have been fatal.
utgard14 Notorious bank robber Roy "Mad Dog" Earle (Humphrey Bogart) is released from prison and is asked by an old friend to help with a robbery. But Earle's not happy with the gang he's given or the woman (Ida Lupino) they've brought along. As they plan the robbery and wait, Earle makes friends with a poor family and takes an interest in their handicapped daughter (a very pretty Joan Leslie).Classic gangster picture from Warner Bros. and one of Bogart's best. This is the movie that convinced WB Bogie could be a bankable star. Later that same year he would star in The Maltese Falcon and the rest is movie history. Bogart is excellent, of course, as is Ida Lupino in one of her better roles. Nice support from Barton MacLane, Arthur Kennedy, Henry Hull, Cornel Wilde, Donald MacBride, and Henry Travers. Great direction, excellent location shooting. Climactic shootout between Earle and the cops is terrific. Essential for fans of WB gangster flicks.
