Vashirdfel Simply A Masterpiece
MamaGravity good back-story, and good acting
Crwthod A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
Mathilde the Guild Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
TheLittleSongbird Briefly comparing to the 1978 film, which is still hugely enjoyable now, 'Grease Live' is vastly inferior in many ways but is still very much watchable on its own merits. As far as live TV productions of musicals go, 'Grease Live' is superior to the live TV productions of 'The Sound of Music' and particularly 'Peter Pan' while fell flat, but 'The Wiz' while uneven fares the best. There are many good things here. Many of the songs are great, some like "Summer Nights", "We Go Together", "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Greased Lightning" are classics. The choreography is spirited and energetic, especially at the end and in "Greased Lightning". The 1950s production values are very attractive, the dialogue is mostly witty though with the odd clunker and pacing though with the odd part where it grinds to a halt (especially "Beauty School Dropout") is sprightly.'Grease Live' also boasts some good performances. Best of the lot is surprisingly Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, she brings sass and vulnerability to the character and successfully sheds her "Disney star" image, proving that she is much better than that. She sounds great, with her voice having come on hugely since the 'High School Musical' films with a powerhouse rendition of "There Are Worse Things I Could Do", one of the production's highlights.Julianne Hough is far superior here than she was in the awful remake of 'Footloose', she is a very charming Sandy and has a lovely tone to her voice, with a sweet "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and doesn't hold back at the end. Jordan Fisher and Carlos PenaVega (apart from getting lost a little in "Greased Lightning" steal scenes, while Ana Gasteyer is good too. Kether Donohue and Elle McLemore prove that you can be funny and camp but also be subtle, and it was great to see Didi Conn and Barry Pearl. On the other hand, this reviewer had mixed views on Aaron Tveit. He has a great voice, better than John Travolta's perhaps, as could be heard in 2012's 'Les Miserables' where his voice was one of the standout voices, and he is an energetic dancer, but he lacks the cockiness and charisma as Danny instead coming over as wooden and bland. Keke Palmer plays Marty far too broadly and is far too theatrical that it was painful to watch her, while Mario Lopez and particularly Haneefah Wood are supremely irritating. Carly Rae Jepsen's Frenchy sounds under-powered and strained, and she flounders with comic timing and never looks comfortable. Not all the songs work either. "All I Need is an Angel" and particularly "Beauty School Dropout" are incredibly out of place and completely take one out of the period with too much of a present day vibe. It was nice to hear "Freddy My Love" and "Those Magic Changes" but the former also seems oddly placed, while the title song "Grease is the Word" is so dreary and the lyrics and vocals too often inaudible in a production plagued with problems with sound and balance with a lot of dipping in and out.All in all, an uneven production and very much a mixed bag. A number of merits but some glaring flaws as well. 5/10 Bethany Cox
Adrienne Evans Literally ruined the original Grease for me. I completely despised this and wish it never came out. I had to watch the REAL Grease almost 20 times to get this crap out of my head. The songs were not as good and all of the acting was horrible. I admit Keke Palmer has an amazing voice but she can not act to save her life. All of the actors seemed "To pure to be pink" and just could not pull off this show. They should have cast actors who had a persona that did not come from Nickelodeon or Disney Channel. Clearly nobody better auditioned for this so they had to scrape the bottom on the can to get someone who could. I barely made it through "Summer Nights" without wanting to puke up on myself. Next time don't remake a musical that set way to high of standard, on second thought just do remake it at all.
yourj I am a teen of the 2010s and had my childhood throughout the 2000s so my most beloved musical will be "High School Musical" but I've known the musical Grease for a long time now since I discovered it in 2012 and to my point of view, this version re-introduced Grease to our generation. Grease is among my favorite musicals and this version proved that Grease really is the word.In my opinion, the 1978 movie and Grease:Live shouldn't be compared to each other. Why? Because both of them were just remakes of the original Broadway show in 1972. One for the big screen and one for the television. So they really are different. Some fans of the movie may complain but they should remember that the movie itself was just a version of the original and Grease: Live is a version of the Broadway show with some parts that were took from the movie version. But I understand why they react that way. I just don't like is that they don't include the original when comparing.I just loved the fact that some of the big stars from Hollywood were part of the show. It included former iconic teen stars, Vanessa Hudgens who portrayed Gabriela in the iconic musical "High School Musical", Keke Palmer from the Nickelodeon sitcom, True Jackson VP and Carlos PenaVega from Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush. Also appeared in the show were three of the decade's big music artists, Carly Rae Jepsen and Jessie J as well as the group band DNCE. It also included Mario Lopez with the Broadway star and Les Miserables actor Aaron Tveit and Dancing with the stars contestant-turned-judge Julianne Hough. It really wasn't just a show with unknown celebrities. Many were famous stars and it helped Grease: Live to get more attention from the younger audience.Speaking of the cast's performance, Everyone in the cast performed well. It may not be the greatest but they still did great. From major roles to minor roles they portrayed their characters well. I love the portrayal of Keke Palmer as Marty because she made Marty flirty, more bitchy and at the same time classy. Though her accent might really sound odd but I actually do not think she's overacting it. The way she acted is very theatrical for me. Another character that stood out to me was Elle Mclemore's portrayal as Patty Simcox. She really slayed it! I also liked Carly Rae Jepsen's portrayal of Frenchy. I never imagined her acting because she's a pop singer, but she really had a talent in acting. Vanessa's portrayal of Rizzo made her character more relatable. You can feel Rizzo on the way she portrayed.I also liked how they rearranged the plot to make things more understandable, like the reason why Sandy left the dance floor where in the 1978 movie, it wasn't clear. The musical performances were great too. I loved how they included "Freddy my Love" and "Those magic changes" where in the movie version, they were removed. "Those Magic Changes" were included though in the movie version but it was just among the background music during the Prom scene. I don't like the performance of Boyz II Men in Beauty School Dropout. It sounded very 1990s boy band. They should've sung ala The Platters. The newly added song number sung by Carly also sounded 2010s. Though I don't care about it because some of the added songs in the movie version also sounded very 70s. It included the opening song, Hopelessly Devoted to You and You're the one that I want, as well as the movie version of Born to the Hand Jive. The scene where the old met the new frenchie is so oddly satisfying for me.I don't like though the idea of the so called "Integration of the Cast". I knew that it was done to avoid some misunderstanding towards the black community but they should have sticked to the historical truth. But i'm fine with it. Over all this was a great version of the Broadway show Grease, both production wise and acting wise. Great job.
ddevlin-49166 Grease: Live is very good. The soundtrack was pretty good and of course, it wasn't as good as the original but still great. They added a new song though, which Frenchy (Carly Rae Jepson) sang well but was just so out of context, it made no sense. It was like it went into the wrong movie. Also, for us while watching live on television, it glitched out a ton during "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and kept going back and forth from a commercial, "Greased Lightening," and the dance scene. Overall pretty good though. If you enjoyed the original Grease, you should definitely try this version. I also love how Pink sang "Grease is the Word" in this one! The beginning was my favorite part of it.
