Quiet Muffin This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
thefan-2 There is a genre of film - this one and Switch come to mind - that depict the denizens of New York City as absurdly neurotic fast-talkers who can't seem to find happiness but who, you realize as the movie hits the 5-minute mark, are all secretly pleased about their excruciating personalities and their irrelevant lives. Pleased. Pleased, when they should be looking in the mirror and telling themselves to snap out of it and get over themselves. I am here to tell you that these movie characters are all figments of some writer's lazy imagination. Do not be afraid to move to New York, it's a lovely place with all kinds of nice people. If you move there - specifically, to the island of Manhattan, either east of west of Central Park or points south - you will find that if you love the city, it will love you back. It's as simple as that. And I promise you will never meet idiots like the preposterous fictions in these movies.
amylongland Absolutely hilarious! I'm amazed that this film didn't get more recognition, it has the same sense of humour as Bridesmaids and is really feel-good. It is the same sort of film as Bridesmaids but Kristen Wiig is good as ever and we really enjoyed watching it. I wouldn't say its quite as good as Bridesmaids but if you're looking for something similar then this is a great watch. Absolutely hilarious! Videoshopemployee I just saw this on FX tonight and was surprised at how good this film is. I think there is a lot more to the film than the other reviews suggest. It is a quirky little film with a great cast and a wonderful script.Without wanting to give too much away, the entire film is an interesting take on the wizard of oz. The performances were brilliant all round, including the really small bit parts. Matt Dillon and Annette Benning steal the show at times but Kristen Wiig gives a really credible performance as Imogene. The direction is great, editing seamless. There are a few predictable moments in the film but overall it is still a good watch. It really is a good film for a Friday or Saturday night in.
phoenix 2 Imogene is a middle aged woman who after being fired from her job and left by her boyfriend, she returns to live with her mother for a few days, as her landlord evicts her. During her stay many of the family secrets are revealed. The film was not bad, it was funny actually, but not memorable. The performances were great, showing the depth of the characters and their weaknesses. But the story, even though it was good, it seemed to have too much going on. And even though the storyline was okay, the too many facts were confusing and tiring. Also the soundtrack was bad.So 3 out of 10, because it wasn't as enjoyable as it could have been.
