Abbigail Bush what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
A_Different_Drummer This is a belated review of a film 8 years old (as I write this) and daylight is a-burning so we don't have time to be coy or beat around the bush. The bottom line is, Tea Leoni did not make enough movies. And by that I mean if this were a plain run of the mill comedy with Gervais (WHO ALWAYS PLAYS HIMSELF) and any other lead actress, then it would be OK.But Leoni makes it part of a film archive. Makes it a treat to savour. She basically did not make enough movies.Leoni had that rare quality of (for lack of a better word) attractiveness that just leaped off the screen.Even as a young actress starting in TV, rumors were always flying that the producers were more interested in the actress herself than in the series they were producing. The parts she did get were always a variation of the classic role she played with Cage in 2000's the Family Man. (Recommended!) In that film she played a love interest powerful enough to make a successful bachelor give it all up and start over. And she sold it.In this film, 8 years after Family Man, she played a love interest powerful enough to make an awkward but funny man (think Woody Alan with a Brit accent) decide to go for the brass ring. And again she sold it.Look at the career of (for ex) Freddie Prinze. He played the same part at least a dozen times. But with Leoni we had to wait years between castings...? And now all we have are films like these. Treasure them.
serafinogm I'll tell you what; Ricky Gervais is a major talent, acerbically witty, clearly immensely insightful and intelligent, an effortless actor as well as a brilliant writer/satirist, the man is simply a joy to behold. It appears the Brits own the franchise on intelligent male satire (Steve Coogan and Simon Pegg are in Ricky's company), however the U.S. did produce Albert Brooks. Ricky's supporting cast was superb, Tea Leoni (I swear she is aging like a fine wine), Greg Kinnear (have always enjoyed his low key urbane performances), and Kristen Wiig (a comedic genius), were wonderful and I can't imagine anyone better in each respective part. The story was delightful and heartfelt, a movie that can be enjoyed by everyone (all those cognizant and intelligent that is). I actively engage projects where Ricky employs his immense talent! The only reason I didn't give the film ten stars is the fact when you are hit by a bus at that speed there is no coming back, you would be toast or as Steve Coogan might put it "burnt bread", there is no coming back short of divine intervention! Ricky, or whomever is responsible, perhaps a glancing blow or a lower speed blow by the bus would have made it a bit more believable? By the way what was the issue with Dr. Pincus was he some sort of strange agoraphobe?
Raul Faust Well, I took around a year to finally watch this film, since the synopsis never really engaged me; more precisely, last week I gave it a chance and saw it in a rainy afternoon. "Ghost Town" is a movie that takes long time to develop something; the first hour of length is simply full of uninteresting conversations that lead almost nowhere. Pincus, the main character, is a grumpy dentist whose life is almost a complete loss, until he, unintentionally, or maybe even against his will, acquires the ability of seeing dead people-- no, we're not talking about Shyamalan's classic. From that point on, Pincus gets in some unpleasant situations, mainly created by Frank, the deceased husband of a beautiful girl named Gwen. After falling in love with her, his life never feels the same; not that he stops being an unsympathetic person, but he finds something interesting to do about his life. There isn't much else that I can say about it, due that "Ghost Town" wasn't any remarkable to me. In my opinion, the story is just too weak to develop much feelings in the spectator, but it's at least fresh and has a beautiful ending. See it yourself (or don't).
namashi_1 'Ghost Town' is an interesting concept, that gets it right, but Fine Performances lead this Supernatural Comedy!'Ghost Town' Synopsis: Bertram Pincus is a man whose people skills leave much to be desired. When Pincus dies unexpectedly, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes, he wakes up to discover that he now has the annoying ability to see ghosts.'Ghost Town' has the ability to make its viewer smile, and thats no mean achievement. Its a sweet & simple film, that doesn't tax your brain, but ends up touching the core of your heart. The only problem was in its slow-pace, which needed some serious persuasion. David Koepp & John Kamps's Screenplay is mostly right. Koepp's Direction, on the other-hand, is subtle. Cinematography, Editing & Art Design, are accurate.Performance-Wise: Ricky Gervais, Téa Leoni & Greg Kinnear lead the narrative with fine performances. Gervais is delightfully wonderful, Leoni is masterfully restrained & Kinnear is simply excellent. On the whole, 'Ghost Town' has fine acting & fine writing working to its advantage.
