Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
Ghoulumbe Better than most people think
Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
Lidia Draper Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
tbruno46 I love Jane Austen and Emma is one of my favorites, but this version is awful, can't believe I wasted my money. I usually prefer the BBC versions but not this one. The leads are horrible, no chemistry, Emma does not come across as a rich refined young woman but comes across as a bratty teenager. Even her clothes are not classy, she wore the same outfits over and over again. Harriet Smith seemed more upper class than she was. I'll stick to the Gwyneth Paltrow or Kate Beckinsale versions. Knightly was too young and wimpy.
Gypsi Bates Based on Jane Austen's novel, this mini-series focuses on Emma Woodhouse (Romola Garai), vain, spoiled, and the belle of her small town, as she tries her hand at matchmaking with disastrous results. As with the novel, this Emma is almost unlikable, and yet. . . there is still a goodness about her that Mr. Knightly(Jonny Lee Miller) and the reader/viewer are able to see. This is one of my favorite Austen novels for it's wit and perspicacity. I was delighted with how closely the series followed the book, deviating only in minor matters. The producers also kept a good feel of Regency times; I had issues, again, with only minor matters. Costumes, hairstyles, locations, and sets were all fantastic. The actors were well cast, and they all did a fine job. Tamsin Greig was particularly good as Miss Bates, as was Michael Gambon's portrayal of Mr. Woodhouse. I truly enjoyed this mini-series and would recommend it for both fans of the book, and those unfamiliar with the novel.
jjnxn-1 Richly produced, endearing version of the Jane Austen classic, Romola is spirited and charming in the title role with Jonny Lee Miller a most desirable and solid Mr. Knightley. While it is a fine rendering the excellent Gwyneth Paltrow version cast a shadow over this if you've seen it. Again the leads are very good and although different are a fine match who inhabit the characters fully. Where this version falls short is the supporting cast, they are professional but don't really stand out as Polly Walker, Toni Collette and Ewan MacGregor did in the 1996 film. The one who comes closest is Jodhi May as Mrs. Weston but still Greta Scacchi had a knowing stillness that is missing. The one who is really missed is the matchless Sophie Thompson who was a brilliant Miss Bates, it would be impossible to improve on her classic performance and the actress who essays the role here doesn't try, giving a much more recessive interpretation which while good is rather colorless. Taken on it's own though without comparisons to the other version this is a very solid BBC offering.
ian lee I can only assume the BBC wanted to poke fun at Jane Austen. Take for instance the sound track. It seems to be saying here is a bunch of silly people in fancy dress performing a very trivial story by some hack called Jane Austen whose language needs updating. Hey wait, maybe we could turn Emma into a feminist tract or a sort of up market East Enders. Then there is Romola Garai. Is this woman an actress ? Then why does she think that every passing moment in which she is on camera must give rise to a repertory of facial expressions, contortions and horrible grimaces ? She is supposed to be Emma Woodhouse not a character in pantomime. Did she read the book ? Has she understood that Austen's wit is in the language ? We do not need facial expressions to help us get the irony. If Garai did read the book or watch the Paltrow version she certainly learned nothing.
