VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
Anoushka Slater While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Rosie Searle It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Danny Blankenship Finally after all these years watched the 1975 B movie cult classic "Death Race 2000" as I'm now watching and dissecting the films of independent and B movie king producer Roger Corman. And I must say this was a thrill a fun classic that entertains never a dull moment and the movie moves quick as it states it's plot and the message of winner seek all is compelling and entertaining! Anyway this picture was ahead of it's time as in 1975 it portrayed a futuristic year that being 2000 and the country is a mess with corrupt morals and politicians being yes men and always at unrest(really that turned out to be true and continues). The only big things in this society is that hit and run driving is a national sport an event that is three days across the country, as with this high speed contest is won by the driver who collects the most points by running over and killing people like pedestrians and spectators. And to challenge things are a group of anti-race activists trying to stop racing for good. The all-time champ is the win at all cost rebel Frankenstein(the late David Carradine in a good role)who's so smooth yet intimidating in a rubber black mask of latex(makes a viewer thank of sadism)and out of the group of race foes it's the young and hot "Machine Gun" Joe Viterbo(in one of Sly Stallone's very early roles)that presents the biggest threat to knock Frankenstein from the race throne. Also to spice this dark sci-fi action up is the appearance of many hot females as plenty of skin is shown as the guys even make cross country stops at massage parlors! Overall "Death Race 2000" is one nice little cult picture a B movie gem that as you watch it's a fine feel good time it has it all sex, action, death, and the challenge of a corrupt political state, true not everything did come true in 2000 still much of it would as these themes shown in 1975 would ring true for the year 2000 and beyond. Plus the work of the late Carradine is A okay and it was nice seeing Stallone in some B movie work just one year before his "Rocky" classic.
SnoopyStyle In a fascist dystopia future, five racers; Calamity Jane, Matilda the Hun, Nero the Hero, Machine Gun Joe Viterbo (Sylvester Stallone) and Frankenstein (David Carradine) travel across the country to win the TransContinental Roadrace. Running over people scores the racers points. Annie Smith is Frankenstein's navigator and possibly plans to kill him as part of an anti-race resistance. It's a campy cult classic. This world is outrageous and silly. However it's a one-joke world and not that funny. It may be a good drinking game. There is no doubt of the movie's camp credentials. It isn't anything more than that.
carbuff This cheesy, campy, dystopian sci-fi, '70s flick walks all over "The Hunger Games," and it was probably made for a small fraction of the catering budget of that modern and mediocre derivative work--correct the dollars for inflation and the comparison would be even more stark. Just enjoy it for the classic camp it is, the car action, the biting social commentary, the early Sylvester Stallone role (which doesn't seem much different from his later roles in either scope or ability), and the occasional topless women. If nothing else, look at it this way, it's half as long as "The Hunger Games" and twice as good.
Scott LeBrun "Death Race 2000" is adrenaline-charged fun, a fast paced, funny, satirical, and bloody sci-fi action picture loaded with political commentary and a cast of B movie icons to die for. Produced by the legendary Roger Corman and directed with gusto by the late Paul Bartel ("Eating Raoul"), it has a wicked sense of humour and also benefits from a bunch of colourful characters and their equally colourful cars. It hits the ground running and rarely lets up, with a particularly delicious wrap-up.It's the future (at least, the future as it was envisioned in 1975), and a no holds barred, brutal cross county car race known as the Transcontinental Road Race is the national sport. The points are scored by running down pedestrians. This sport is used by a totalitarian government to keep its violence-hungry population satisfied. The star of the race is the peoples' champion, Frankenstein (David Carradine), who has had various body parts replaced over the years. His chief rival is the foul tempered Machine Gun Joe Viterbo (a hilarious, scene stealing Sylvester Stallone). Competing against them are Calamity Jane (Mary Woronov), Matilda the Hun (Roberta Collins), and Nero the Hero (Martin Kove). Seeking to put an end to the race are a group of rebels known as The Resistance.Carradine is lots of fun as the cynical Frankenstein, although Stallone is the one who really walks off with the movie. Simone Griffeth is lovely as Frankensteins' new navigator, Annie; she, Woronov, Collins, and the always cute Louisa Moritz all make for fine eye candy. Adding to the entertainment value are other familiar faces such as Don Steele (a riot as annoying announcer Junior Bruce), Joyce Jameson, Fred Grandy, and Leslie McRay. (Look for John Landis in a bit part as a mechanic.) Director Bartel has an uncredited cameo as a doctor."Death Race 2000" is full of high speed action, explosions, and a genuinely interesting script by Robert Thom and Charles B. Griffith, based on the story "The Racer" by Ib Melchior. It does make us consider our own appetites for destruction while sating them at the same time. It may strike viewers as being dated in some ways, but it has an undeniable campy and cheesy charm going for it, making it hard to resist, and entertaining to revisit on a regular basis.Nine out of 10.
