JinRoz For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
Konterr Brilliant and touching
Catangro After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Mohamed Abdalla If you expect to see breathtaking thriller movie, then don't watch this dull and pale one.The movie starts showing "Morgan Sullivan" applying for a job in a high tech company about spying job, but then he gets in contact with a woman that is going to change all his beliefs although her few show ups.The good thing that every time she shows up, she starts to explain to him about everything he doubts about. The image was really dark and pale throughout the movie except the last scene, it really wasn't an appealing thing to see that lack of coloration. The always surprising look on the face of "Jeremy Northam" is weird specially it's added with his tired look which really felt lazy and not related to any thrill. I guess "Lucy Liu" did her worst roles in this one. Finally, it's a good idea's movie that may keep you wondering throughout it -if you kept watching it till the end and succeed in fighting the boredom-, it has a lot of cheap special effects that really affect the quality of the whole movie, they also forgot to deal with sound effects specialist as you will notice that the soundtrack is a continuous repeating one minute suspension music.
panCDCA Watched an absolutely wonderful twisty turny psych-thriller movie on Netflix called "CYPHER" even though it is 13 years old had never heard of it before and it is amazingly good. To me, it is everything the Matrix movies tried to be but weren't. To me, Cypher relies far less on CGI and more on human interaction and I am someone who looks to a movie or TV show for the acting and human interactions far more than the special effects and computer generated interfaces. If you are looking for violence and bloodshed or non stop action, you won't find it here. It starts out with us seeing a corporate schlep, named Martin Sullivan (played by Jeremy Northam), wanting to be a corporate "spy". The corporation ships him from city to city to "transmit" their competition's convention speeches, under a "new name".Buffalo is the first city and where we meet a mysterious woman named Rita Foster, (played so-so by Lucy Liu). It is here that we find things may not be what they seem. This movie was directed by Vincenzo Natali, who took us on a great journey in the original and great horror psych thriller flick "The Cube". He keeps you guessing and even while the clues lead in one direction the underlying flow is pointing towards something else. Halfway through the movie, you may guess and think you know the answer but be aware you will NOT because the clues NEVER stop until the very ending.Overall a terrific movie, the writing and direction the movie takes are amazing, the acting and chemistry could have been better especially by Lucy Liu, she does fall flat and at times stiff and others just aloof (not much character development), it could just be the way her character was written, directed or just her acting. But be assured that is just a petty critique that in no way truly harms the movie. It's a definitive 9/10 for me and a movie I could watch a few more times and probably see more to it than I did the first time.
jackwilliamson946 Let me just start out the box by saying that this movie bears no similarities whatsoever to the movie The Matrix. Heard someone say it did; it does not. What it IS is, IMHO, perhaps the coolest spy flick of all time. The story line is intriguing, the plot twists and turns unpredictably, the anti-hero wins, sort-of, in a way that you'll never see coming.Jeremy Northam gives an excellent performance, as his character transforms from a nerdy uptight white guy to a gritty, no-holds-barred super-spy of the type that you do not want to have mad at you. Bond has nothing on this guy. If you've seen The Hitcher, the real one with C. Howel Thomas, you'll have an idea what I mean. Sadly, Lucy Liu, as the heroine, gives a decidedly less impressive performance. There were several scenes that I would not have settled for had I been directing. But she did do well enough for the most part, so it doesn't detract from the movie as a whole. It's a shame this little gem didn't get greater play, it really does deserve more. My advice to you is definitely do invest the time watching it; you'll be glad you did.
Leofwine_draca A mind-bending science fiction thriller that comes across as a mix of THE MATRIX and TOTAL RECALL. CYPHER doesn't have a huge budget, so don't go in expecting masses of special effects and mind-blowing visuals as in those other two films; instead this is a film offering purely cerebral thrillers as it works through the layers of consciousness to the very core of identity. Director Vincenzo Natali delivered the goods with CUBE and this is nearly as good.In the end, it turns out the film has one twist too many, crossing the divide between the merely implausible and the outlandish, but that doesn't stop it being a pacey and inventive ride up until that point. Brian King's script keeps you guessing with a complex brew of brainwashing, corporate spying, femme fatales and one innocent man, and the film's premise is never less than intriguing. As for the cast, well, Jeremy Northam is fine as the everyday 'grey man' caught up in an adventure that's rapidly spiralling out of control, and Lucy Liu, who I usually dislike, has never been better.CYPHER is one of those films it's best to not know too much about when you watch it; keeping up with the twisty-turny plotting is part of the appeal. I liked it.
