Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
Senteur As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
Motompa Go in cold, and you're likely to emerge with your blood boiling. This has to be seen to be believed.
Francene Odetta It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
sttrhm This film is a fairly realistic portrayal of the life country stars face--whether you're the aging star trying to come back after crumbling under pressure, a rising star full of innocence and idealism with only a naive dream telling you what you're about to experience, a cynical streetwise veteran who has seen it all and who abhors the spotlight while still benefiting from it, or auxiliaries known as management who whore after the money and don't really have a clue about music or what their stars are going through. What I really don't like about this film is the way they make Beau out to be some kind of hero. He's a heartthrob for sure, with his white tooth smile and low timbre voice, but he's really a jerk. First of all, good AA sponsors NEVER get romantically involved with those they're sponsoring. That's an absolute capital offense in that circle, and this movie illustrates why. The recoverer is not strong enough to handle the vagaries of a new relationship and becomes weaker still if the sponsor later breaks it off. Second, he's getting involved with a married woman, and her husband seems to sense that he's more than just a sponsor right from the start. Finally, he takes up with her biggest fear--the up-and-comer that she sees replacing her. No wonder she saw her end and the need to exit. And if that wasn't bad enough, she had a so-called husband who hasn't quite forgiven her not only for their lost baby, and now suspects her affair (which is verified in the movie) but mostly for the botched Dallas concert which probably cost them oodles of $$$ that deep down he lusted after and now is trying to recover before she is really ready yet. Oh I know, he wants to get her back out before she's forgotten completely, but he withholds love, affection, and attention--denying her unconditional love and support she desperately needs right now. So she turns to Beau--who unfortunately seems to think that part of meaningful support takes place between the sheets. It's debatable if he withdraws because he truly thinks he shouldn't be doing this or if he's getting the hots for the New Young Girl. Either way he's screwed up and she paid the price, which he doesn't seem to realize his culpability for.
emilyabradie Country Strong is the typical Hollywood story with a southern twist. Although the story line could be predictable to many, director Shana Feste gives it a twang, with the help of the charming cast. Starring characters Gwyneth Paltrow, Leighton Meester, Garrett Hedlund and Tim McGraw take the often used fame/affair/addiction plot and transform it into a song you can't get out of your head and a performance you can't stop watching. The 2010 movie begins with famous country singer Kelly Cantor (Paltrow), and rehab worker by day small performer by night Beau (Hedlund) writing a song together in Kelly's room in rehab. It is obvious Beau and Kelly have a romantic relationship and the storyline begins to heat up when McGraw's character, James, is introduced to the audience as Kelly's husband turned career manager. It doesn't take those watching long to form a hatred and resentment towards the hostile, unloving James, who pulls Kelly out of rehab too soon, and a love for bad boy with a soft spot Beau. Kelly is immediately launched back into her singing career where she left off, but this time with company. Beau and an aspiring "country Barbie" (as described by Beau), Chiles Stanton (Meester) are along for the ride as Kelly's opening act during her three city tour. As if the Cantors' marriage wasn't messed up enough, there are suspicions of an affair between James and Chiles. As much as we do not want to feel sorry for a multi- millionaire with an alcohol and drug problem, the journey on the tour is a mix of emotions for the viewers. We are informed that at Kelly's last show in Dallas before being sent to rehab, she had a miscarriage due to falling off of the stage due to being drunk at the performance. Blame is obviously in line for Kelly when it is seen in writing, but Paltrow's strong emotion and obvious love for her unborn baby is heartbreaking and keeps the viewer engages in her excellent performance. If this movie didn't stir up enough emotion as it is, Fest includes an adorable scene, as well as my personal favorite, featuring Kelly visiting a preschool boy and dancing with him for the make a Wish Foundation. The entire movie is a roller coaster of emotions for the characters and the viewers alike. Any person who has feelings and a warm heart is bound to enjoy this movie at least half as much as I did and do each time that I watch it. It is a movie that can be watched time and time again without getting old. The ending is as big of a surprise the first time as it is each time it is seen. Each actor is perfectly fit for their character and performs it to a high standard. As the plot is reused and redone,Country Strong remains so unique that it is an unrecognizable story until you find yourself watching a sub-par, poorly done version of the same scheme.
spencerirvine1 This is a musical. Deaf people like musicals too. But not one single song lyric is subtitled. If a character is talking on stage there are subtitles. As soon as that character starts singing the subtitles stop. This makes no sense what so ever. Why treat a deaf person this way. We already can't here the music. It's like kicking us when were already down. Are the mega-stars in this movie okay with this? Some movies respect the deaf so much they will subtitle a cow going "moo". Why does this movie not respect the deaf enough to subtitle the songs. The songs in this movie I assume were chosen because the lyrics were relevant to the story. Why not give the deaf the whole story.
Spuzzlightyear Sort of like "A Star Is Born" for the country music set, and maybe a little "Walk The Line", don't forget "The Rose". and oh, of course, "All About Eve".. As a matter of fact, there's not that much originality in this movie at all, despite it's interesting cast. The main reason I saw this is, I like Paltrow a lot, and was curious to see her pull this role (and the singing) off. She does so with great effect. I like how the final 1/3 become sort of a concert movie, with her pulling out all the stops! Yeah! She's country! The film is sort of knee jerking around though, people shift from one emotion (caring) to another (not caring) without much explanation though. Still, if you're a country music fan, it's hard not to pass this one up.
