Tony Heck "Just one more thing and it's all over and we can do whatever we want with our lives." Todd (Labine) wants everything to be just perfect at the family cottage where he plans to propose to Cammie (Akerman). Things are going to plan until his brother and his girlfriend show up. After an attempt to get them to leave goes horribly wrong Todd's brother winds up dead. When Cammie finds out she has one solution, kill his girlfriend as well and no one will ever know. The plan is perfect until they return to the cabin and see a party happening...with guests invited by his brother. I was looking forward to this one mainly because the slasher- comedy movie Tucker and Dale vs Evil was so great I was hoping it would be like that. This did have funny parts in this but overall this wasn't nearly as funny as Tucker and Dale was. Much like that one though this is a very dark comedy and you laugh at things you shouldn't laugh at but the problem for me was that even though the actions were way over the top the actors seemed to play the movie straight. This little aspect made the movie lose some of the laughs that it could have gotten. Comparing this to Tucker and Dale isn't fair but that is the type of movie it is and is not as good as that one. Overall, disappointing but mainly because of my expectations. Not as funny as I was expecting. I give this a B-.

Matt_Layden Todd brings his girlfriend up to the family cottage with the intention of proposing to her. Problems arise when his loser of a brother, Salinger shows up with his on/off girlfriend and ruins everything. Things go from bad to worse when the two brothers get into a pushing match, which ends with Salinger dead. Now Todd must keep it together before other people find out. Cottage Country takes awhile before it finds the groove it wants to be in. This happens once the brother is killed. Everything leading up to that is really hit and miss comedy and set up. Labine doesn't seem comfortable, Akerman doesn't have much to do and Punch is incredibly annoying. Once the conflict arises, meaning the dead brother, the film finally gets into the right balance of comedy and horror...even though it goes lite on the horror. Labine plays Todd, and everyman that people tend to walk over, be it his boss, brother and even wife. There is a bit of Tucker & Dale vs Evil intention here, with the character and overall theme in the film, but Cottage Country fails to deliver the laughs and gore. Instead we get chuckles here and there, mainly from the cast and the situation they are in. Akerman surprised me here. She held her own as the marriage obsessed wife. I forgot she could do comedy well. The film tries this balancing act, but never quiet finds the footing. There are oddly placed scenes in which Todd sees his dead brother talking to him, but this adds nothing to the story and doesn't happen enough. There are only two scenes we get to see this interaction and decay of his psychological state. There were some tense and funny moments when the couple were trying their best to keep the murders under wraps, but not one memorable scene that stands out as really funny. The film had a decent premise (although it was a bit of a stretch) and it didn't really seem to take any chances. I would have appreciated it more if it had.Cottage Country is a decent Canadian comedy horror that is lite on both. If you can get past the awful choice of having Lucy Punch do an odd accent for cheap laughs, and you can appreciate the ludicrous aspect of the premise and these horrible characters, then give Cottage Country a look. Just don't expect much, you'll leave a little bit surprised.

He gets delayed by his boss putting in a last minute requirement that ruins his Friday. They leave late for their trip.Todd and Cammie get to the cottage that his parents own. They think they will be alone, but Todd's brother Salinger shows up with Masha. Cammie insists that Todd gets Salinger to leave. While Cammie and Masha are out collecting mushrooms, Salinger will not be convinced with words. So he and Todd get into a fight that ends with Todd killing Salinger.Cammie and Todd have a rather earnest discussion. She's 34 and does not want to wait for Todd to get out of jail or wait to find another man suitable to father her children. So she convinces him to kill Masha, which does not go too smoothly.Todd forgets to tell Cammie about Salinger's plans to invite some people over. When Cammie and Todd get back from his formal proposal to Cammie on the island that she insisted on, the 'some people' have arrived, and turns out to be a full scale party.Some of the party goers are very interested in where Salinger is.-----Scores-----Cinematography: 10/10 Really good in both daylight and in dark scenes. Beautiful scenery.Sound: 8/10 OK.Acting: 3/10 Malin Akerman and Tyler Labine I did not believe for a second. Lucy Punch was just irritating. Dan Petronijevic I could have done without, completely.Screenplay: 3/10 Was this supposed to be funny? Fail. Was this supposed to be a a reasonable crime procedural? Not even close. Was it an action film? Well, no. There is perhaps one fight in the film. The plus 3 is for the well deserved ending.

thesar-2 While I already had a distaste for overly spoiler movie trailers, Cottage Country pushed me over the edge. (And just a warning, if you're not into spoilers, like I'm not, this HAS TO HAVE a bare minimum of some, so fair warning. If you're like me, I would just watch this movie first – and not the trailer, and then read my take.)My friend recommended this to me because he knows I have a "thing" for Tyler Labine. Granted, he's a TV-show killer and hasn't made that big of a splash at the cinema – it takes me several movies to get someone to know who I'm talking about when I try and describe him to someone who's never heard of him, but I'm glad that funny (and sexy) beast is still making films.So, that friend asked me to watch the two-minute trailer of a movie I've never heard about before. I got one-minute in, and there's one major spoiler of what's to happen in the movie. I stopped the preview and did watch the movie, but all the way through to that scene which happens at just past the 19-minute mark, I kept expecting it.I am NOT going to ruin it here, as it was for me, but you would never see this coming had you avoided all trailers, plot synopsis or reviews. Sad. It would've been a deep shocker.As for the movie on its own merit and avoiding my irrelevant problem, it's an okay film about a boyfriend/girlfriend couple who, after a stressful work life, take a week out at the guy's parent's cottage in order for him to propose. Sadly, unexpectedly and uninvitedly, his Pauly Shore-type brother and dumb girlfriend crash his plans and decide to have a party at the cottage. The boyfriend, Labine's Todd, is a wimp while his girlfriend wears the pants and it's up to Todd to evict the brother in order to continue with their special weekend.Well, it was a Very Bad Things week of sorts with a slight Hangover. Will Todd be able to bypass the big party, the uninvited guests, his demanding soon-to-be fiancée, that awful don't-touch-a-lady, too-many-questions dude and go back to normal?I will say the movie was well shot, the actors – all of them, gave their all, some of the lines were intentionally funny and the scenery was crisp and nice. But, sadly, the movie wasn't that original, and because of which, you expected a lot of what happens to appear. Also, it wasn't as funny as the dark humor suggests and the movie introduces scenes from a certain American Werewolf from London that honestly had no place. So much so, they were a blatant rip-off.A barely recommendation…if you're a Tyler Labine and good-looking locales fan.
