Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Chirphymium It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Paynbob It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
whitneejohnson I think that this movie was a good movie and another addition to it would be great. I enjoyed the acting, the storyline and the scenery. I feel it deserves a higher rating and more people should check it out.
Oliverdaniel-oliver This movie was not as bad as I expected it to be, but it wasn't really that good either. The plot is really short and boring, and the ending was very disappointing. I have seen many documentaries on Chernobyl and the movie kind of threw all logic out the window. One would of expected at least one character to have common sense when running around a place full of radiation. The plot was rushed a lot in many scenes and the ending really pissed me off. The script was not bad, but it could have been improved. The actors and actresses were really good as majority of them have been in successful movies and TV shows, but you could see that their real acting talents were not expressed enough due to the scenes being rushed a lot as I said before. However, the movie was not all bad. The special effects were impressive and the fact that the movie was shot in the actual town of Chernobyl is really cool. Overall the movie is not terrible, but it's not that great either. If you could find a way to watch it for free or cheap then watch it, but I personally would not spend money to watch it.
Filipe Neto This film revolves around the forbidden excursion of a group of students to an abandoned city near the old Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Everything goes well and the film manages to introduce the subject very well. Suddenly, things go wrong and the group becomes isolated and uncontactable in the middle of the city, while nightfall quickly and mysterious things seem to walk in the dark. It's a great idea for a horror movie, no doubt. Original, relatively little explored, the subject touches a situation well known to people. The big problem is that the script did not know how to properly exploit this, it develops well until the terror should begin to feel more intensely, and its at that moment that the script loses itself. After that, it develops in a hurried and predictable way, without scares or fear, in a relatively warm way. The end is disastrous. To make matters worse, the characters almost did not deserve psychological development, they are just meat for the kill. There are absolutely unlikely moments, and the creatures chasing the characters are absolutely rudimentary, undeveloped, and boring. The sound effects are quite elementary. The scenarios are the best of this film: they really can transport us to the original places and give the idea of the drama that was the evacuation of the region around Chernobyl. The radiation issue is addressed, but its very undervalued and has little interest for the plot, which is bad. It could have been used in a smarter way, like all the rest of this film. This was a good idea, but the final product is very dumb.
samgiannn I wish I would have known that the screenplay was written by Shane Van Dyke, and if you don't know who that is, he directed a movie called Titanic II (yes, it's a real movie). Had I been aware of this unfortunate fact, I would have been spared of wasting 88 minutes on this laughably bad The Hills Have Eyes rip-off. In Chernobyl Diaries, six tourists hire a tour guide to take them into the abandoned city of Pripyat, where workers for the Chernobyl nuclear reactor used to live. After a few lame jump scares, the crew begins to suspect that the town isn't completely abandoned. Oren Peli came up with the story, and it's pretty obvious since there's not much action until the very end. This has never been much of a problem for me as long as the movie can conjure up a creepy atmosphere and some good suspense. What this movie does instead is try to scare the audience with a ton of fake jump scares and age-old clichés. It doesn't make for an entertaining movie when the characters keep making the same stupid mistakes every other movie character has made before. Watching a bunch of dimwits getting killed off in the dark is just predictable. However, the real atrocity here is the cinematography. For the first thirty minutes of the film, I was convinced this was a found footage flick because of how god damn shaky the camera was. It looked like this was filmed by a blender. Other than a decently interesting setting, Chernobyl Diaries is an embarrassingly awful movie that uses all the worst horror tropes.
