Diagonaldi Very well executed
SunnyHello Nice effects though.
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
ianhyhu-176-173937 Whenever I talk about movies with someone, I would refer to most older movies that I grew up watching. But for me, Casablanca is a movie that I grew older watching. Since many have commented on its plot and greatness, I will skip the obligated summary of Casablanca and go immediately into my review.Casablanca is a movie that has matured with me; the more life experiences I had, the more enjoyable it was. As an example, the scene where Ilsa listens to Sam play As Time Goes By seemed extraneous before I experienced my first heartbreak. Now, when I hear her tear up with the song in the background, I feel like I could cry with her. The movie was more enjoyable the more I watched it as well. For the first time, I thought it was all right. But on the subsequent viewings, I saw the small nuances and expressions in Rick and Ilsa's actions as they tried to stay casual despite having a tragic past; I recognized that all the dialogue was necessary to accumulate in an unforgettable ending; and as I mentioned above, I empathized with the characters more and more.Watching Casablanca is like watching the sunset. The longer you look, the more times you look, the more beautiful it gets.
umichjal Hollywood today is a shell of its former self. It struggles to innovate, to inspire us, and to tell a story that "everyone" can stand behind. Casablanca came at a time, when the world was imploding unto itself. The movie mirrored life at the time. A world war. People split apart by this war. Nations and their people forced to choose what they believe in order to survive. In summary, a disruption of the life everyone knew. Rick and his cafe summarized alittle bit of what this world had become. A story with many stories interwoven inside it. Mystery. Intrigue. Love. Nationalism. It is all mixed together in this realistic storyline. Classics are made because they touch people on a different level than most films. Hollywood outdid itself with this movie. The "politics" of the film were appropriate, timely, and summarized what everyone felt at the begging of WWII.
stellag2008 There has been much written about Casablanca since it was released in 1942 and most of it is about the excellence of this classic film. You can't help but love this picture! You become mesmerized by the actors and the scenes they play. The story is interesting and the film in my opinion is flawless. After watching this picture your faith in humanity is once again restored. These people are the real superheroes, not the cartoon characters worshiped in today's films. Rick Blaine and Victor Lazlo where no Redford or Newman when it came to looks, but damn if they weren't sexier! Who knew after watching Bogie in so many 30's gangster flicks that he would be the epitome of love and romance in the 40's. And how can you not help but love and feel empathy for Ingrid Bergman as we watch her struggle with the love she feels for Rick and the pride and loyalty she feels for Victor? As always, Claude Rains, Perez Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, S.Z. Sakall, Conrad Veidt, Dooley Wilson, Leonid Kinskey and the remaining supporting cast are remarkable. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favor, grab a box of Kleenex, round up the usual suspects and watch this film. You won't be sorry. Here's looking at you kid!
robfwalter What I found most extraordinary about this film is the way it manages to engage right from the start. Within ten minutes, the plot had me enthralled, the characters had me emotionally committed and I was fascinated by the moral questions. How will Viktor Lazlo escape the Nazis? How complete is Rick's moral degradation? Is there any limit to the depravity of the Vichy regime's representative in Morocco? What happened in Paris between Rick and Ilsa? These questions are all addressed simultaneously as the action unfolds with hypnotic acting by both Bogart and Bergman and brilliantly tight plotting. Some of the other actors are not quite up to the standard of the leads, but I think this is the way films were made at the time, with broader acting by minor parts than we usually see in films today. So much of this film is now cliche, but that's because it defined modern Hollywood cinema and thus had a tremendous impact on Western culture. With some essential cultural artefacts, this ubiquity can make them seem a bit tired or over the top, but Casablanca is so perfectly pitched and moves along at such a wonderful pace that it transcends its own transcendence to be what Hollywood has always aspired to - pure entertainment.
