SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
BA_Harrison The Carry On gang are admitted to hospital once again for more medical mirth-making, the marvellous ensemble cast bringing to life an eclectic range of eccentric characters. Jim Dale plays bumbling Dr. Kilmore, who is forced to resign by conniving Matron (Hattie Jacques) and egotistical Dr. Tinkle (Kenneth Williams) who falsely accuse him of the sexual harassment of several nurses (including ditzy Babs Windsor and the lovely Anita Harris). Sid James, Bernard Bresslaw, Frankie Howerd, Charles Hawtree and Peter Butterworth are among the crazy patients who decide to use whatever means necessary to force a confession from the devious pair and have the wronged physician reinstated. Not quite as ribald as the 70s movies, but not without its saucy moments, the fourteenth in the Carry On series is a delightful mixture of harmless slapstick, mild innuendo and cheap titillation. Even though I tend to prefer the period piece/genre Carry On films to the contemporary efforts, Carry On Doctor remains a firm favourite thanks to memorable performances and a sparkling script packed full of priceless moments, such as the classic 'What a lovely looking pear' gag, Harris accidentally having her skirt pulled down on the hospital roof, and a few textbook 'phwooarrrs' from a variety of randy men as Babs wiggles her way to the wards.
w22nuschler Frankie Howerd plays the part of a man who says people do not need doctor's to survive. He then gets a bad back and must go to the doctor. Jim Dale play Dr. Kilmore, and he lets him know who he is in a very funny scene. Kenneth Williams plays a wacky doctor. Bernard Bresselaw, Sid James and Charles Hawtrey play a couple of the patients. Bernard wanders around a lot and he sees Dilys Laye and falls for her. Hattie Jacques plays the matron again. Barbara Windsor shows up later to play one of the nurses. Two of my favorite nurses are played by Valerie Von Ost. She appeared in my favorite Avengers episode, "Dead Man's Treasure". Also there is Anita Herris who plays the lead, Nurse Clarke. She is so hot and beautiful. The best scene of the film has Jim Dale thinking Barbara Windsor is going to jump off the roof. She is actually sun bathing. Jim almost falls off the roof until Nurse Clark comes for him. He holds on to her and rips her skirt right off and then he falls into the tub of another hot brunette. Jim is fired for the incident. The patients revolt and they get Jim's job back. The main three men and Nurse Clarke make this film very good.
wristwatchraver-1 This is the first of Frankie Howard's two appearances with the Carry On team (the second is Carry On up the Jungle) and this is without doubt one of the greatest laugh-o-matic films the Carry on crew have ever produced. This film tells of a handsome hospital doctor (Jim Dale) unjustly fired by a villainous registrar (Kenneth Williams) and his matron (Hattie Jaques, obviously) for unwittingly appearing on top of the Nurses home, Things heat up when the paitents take matters into their own hands! It is testament to its enduring popularity that it was soon followed with a sequel. Who could forget Bernard Bresslaw in that nurses outfit? Or Sid James' almost successful attempts to break all the hospital rules? And Frankie Howard's pain in the back? This is quintessential carry on and one of the best.
bob the moo Normally when I write reviews of films I have seen I open with a short plot summary – it helps me focus my thoughts on the film I have just seen and also provides a bit more information for any readers. However with Carry on Doctor the plot is little more than a series of antics involving the patients and the doctors. In fairness, this may not be a bad thing since the "plot" in the film Carry On Matron was the worst part of it. Anyway, here we have a collection of love-struck patients, flirting doctors, pratfalls and women with ample breasts and giggles. So far so basic and to be honest none of any of these really work that well, producing a film that isn't that funny and pretty much does what you expect it to do.However, what makes it better than these aspects and better than Matron is the presence and material of Frankie Howerd. For those that like him he is great with a constant tongue in his cheek and material that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the script. Whether he is giving the nurses a hard time or dropping wonderful in-jokes (he greets a daffodil with "oh no you don't – I've seen that movie") he is the best thing in the film and makes it much better than it should have been. The rest of the cast are OK without really doing much. Having seen them be good in Matron, Williams and Jacques were a disappointment with not a great deal to do. Dale's clumsy doctor is obvious and easy while Windsor is all breasts and Butterworth and Bresslaw don't have much more to do. James is his usual self to good effect but I must admit that I liked the fact that Sims wasn't immediately recognisable as the sort of characters she usually plays.Overall this is an enjoyable film but not consistently; instead it is the presence of Howerd that raises everything to a higher level – his delivery is classic and his material is head and shoulders above the rest of the script. I generally prefer the Carry On movies that have more of a setting and some narrative to them but Howerd makes this one work and it is an enjoyable entry in the series just as it started to go further down the road of crudity that would kill it late in the seventies.
