Synopsis

When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

Reviews

WasAnnon Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
WillSushyMedia This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Janis One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
KC Quinn It is beyond me how an excellent movie such as Captain Ron received such a low rating. Of course I never understand the ratings here...really great movies with low ratings and real stinkers with extremely high. At times I wonder if the stinkers are not just pumped up in score by friends. Who knows...but over the years I stopped reading reviews til after I viewed the movie. They just cannot be trusted.Good comedies are difficult to find nowadays. If you come across one watch it and enjoy...don't just dis it and toss it aside.Captain Ron has all the elements of a great comedy. Good comedic actors, good plot, and just enough foreboding when released it comes back and hits you much harder on the funny side than ever expected.Martin Short and Mary Kay Place played their parts well but, I have to admit, Kurt stole the show...it didn't even seem like he was acting...he was Captian Ron!!!
FlashCallahan A family in Chicago inherits a yacht, 'The Wanderer', formerly owned by Clark Gable. They decide to sail it from the island of St. Pomme de Terre, to Miami. They sail with the assistance of Captain Ron and their little holiday turns into more than they bargained for....This is one of those films that I always wanted to see as a teenager. It was never released theatrically here, and I believe my rental store only ever had one copy, so I had to wait over twenty years for the pleasure.and it's so not the film I thought it was. Russell is great as the titular character, all Plissken and Gabriel Cash, whenever he is on the screen, the film is hilarious, it's just the family have no dynamic, and spend the majority of the film moaning and looking miserable.I know CR is supposed to vex Martin Short, but he whines from the moment his character is introduced. The locations are wonderful, and it goes along at a fast pace, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, maybe I left it a little too late.and I was really surprised by the nudity and foul language. I'm no prude, but it really threw me.Shame the film didn't.
lukejmu This movie is so amazing. It basically has it all, Kurt Russell, Martin short, comedy, drama, pirates, boats, guns, fire, boobs, and fire-breathers. It doesn't get much better. The performance Russell gives in showing the resolve, determination, attention to detail and focus shown by the Harvies in their pursuit of a free lifestyle, truly shows a level of unwavering mental toughness that is very impressive and without a doubt lies at the heart of the film's appeal. Ron, is tough, brave and stubborn as he fights through every obstacle, setback and trial throughout the journey. If this movie were to be re-leased today it would look something like this. LarryBrownHouston This movie is worth watching. I think some negative reactions are from disappointed expectations rather than the movie not being actually good. One problem is that it's marketed as a comedy but I don't really see it that way. It's one of those movies that is more amusing than laugh out loud funny. I notice that, in spite of its apparent low rating here on IMDb, there are many enthusiastic reviews here and only 4 that trash it.Obviously, much of the fun is in watching Kurt Russell and Martin Short. Regarding Kurt Russell, the guy is a major star and goes waaaay back to the 60s as already a major star. If you are a fan of his (as 40+ years' worth of people are), you will enjoy watching him cut up in this whacky role. He's a lot of fun and since I've been a fan since 1967's Flubber, I really enjoyed his entire performance.I'm a big Martin Short fan but so often his roles in movies are restrained, e.g. The Three Amigos. I'm not really sure what he is shooting for in that persona, but if you like him he can come across as charming in whatever he says or does. In this case his character is again restrained, the straight guy, and on the annoying side, plus he's a little bit of a loser. None of that seems like a formula for success and I don't really think the character or performance works all that well but since I like him he comes across as charming for me.The movie is largely an adventure and it works on that level. A lot of things go wrong and I don't like that type of movie but it doesn't hit that close to home for me because I've never tried to quit my job and take a boat across the world. So the situations seems so outlandish that I can laugh them off without feeling Martin's pain.Anyway, as many others here have said, it's pretty good and especially if you're a fan of either or both of the stars, it's worth watching.
