BallWubba Wow! What a bizarre film! Unfortunately the few funny moments there were were quite overshadowed by it's completely weird and random vibe throughout.
Jonah Abbott There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Tayyab Torres Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
Andruha This movie is an amazing mixture of western, musical, action, drama, crime/gangster, film-noir, comic/superhero, dark comedy, parody, futuristic/post-apocalyptic fiction, kung fu/samurai/martial arts with a origami-style decors, a unique music and sound editing, fight choreography, and a subtle dark humour! I've had watched hundreds, maybe thousands of movies in my life - mainstream and independent; American, European and Asian; and of any genre - but I haven't been so pleasantly surprised in years! Its critics compare it to Sin City and Kill Bill - it is similar in a way but far different in essence. The only realistic comparison I saw in the reviews was to Dark City and Scanner Darkly - Bunraku has far more in common with these movies than the Tarantino's. Even Guy Ritchie's Revolver, even Rock'n'rolla, stand closer to Bunraku than Sin City, yet are far different. And, yes, no one among the critics of the movie mentioned that it's hilarious! And this is its main idea. It shouldn't be taken seriously, because it's designed to be funny.I was amazed by the acting, even in the small roles - not an Oscar-winning, but true to the movie and its surrealistic atmosphere. And the accents were amazing too. Same goes for the decors, sound-editing and music, and even the fight choreography which, although not among the best I've seen (being a huge fan of martial arts and the respective movies), is truly unique and original and doesn't copy anything: just like everything else, the fights maintained the surreal atmosphere of the movie, being fought in ways and by rules, uncommon for our world - perfectly mixing the real with the surreal!Yet the overall rating of the movie is pretty logical: Bunraku is not a movie to every taste. It can only be truly appreciated by those who enjoy at least most, if not all, of the above mentioned genres. In my particular case, I only discovered it few days ago, and by now I've already watched it some 20 times or so.10/10 on me!
tags_skeewee Every one has their own opinions, but I to disagree with the bad reviews. This was an interesting, good pace, wonderfully styled movie. .it had action that was no too over the top, it was colorful, fun, odd, but not boring. It kept my attention, it was a good story, nothing bad to say. Woody Harrelson played his role as the layer back bar keep. The two fighters, The Man and Yoshikawa were great, they played their parts beautifully. The actor who played number two was good as the villain, he portrayed the bad as well. The story line kept me engaged. The comic book feel of the movie was visually stunning. Most of the movies today suck, but this movie shows there is still some ingenuity and imagination in Hollywood.
Daniel Heeris I found this movie by accident on Netflix so imagine my surprise when Woody Harrelson, Josh Hartnett, Ron Perlman and Demi Moore showed up to entertain me. This movie is all about style, and not so much about story. But even the most used and dull story can be interesting when told well, and this movie does just that; tell a story well. It has a constant yet subtle feel of A Clockwork Orange to it, but without feeling plagiarizing. It has its own unique style that instead of going for realism, exaggerates the important and downscale the less important, much like the set in a live play.It feels like the kind of movie that can be watched several times and deliver the same high level of entertainment every time, and for that I give it 8 out of 10.
nolan-anthony2 The last movie I gave 7 out of ten was Sin City. This is even more abstract than the brilliant former but it is just as good a flick. The sets are obviously from a kind of West End show than a movie but it works. The plot is quite good and the acting is superb.I normally don't go for martial arts kind of flicks but this one blends Eastern Martial Arts with Western Plot so seamlessly that one barely notices.Overall a flick that is well worth a watch - But remember, disengage your brain, you reality and everything you have come to expect from films. This Genre is - Abstract. I love it.
