taibaliaqat I watched this movie with high hopes after reading so many positive reviews on it. All I can say is I am greatly disappointed. Firstly there's so much pointless dialogue which I assume was intended to be funny but it most definitely wasn't.I love Ice Cube and his appearance in other movies such as 22 Jump Street and of course Are We There Yet. There were a few heart warming moments which were then quickly ruined by the cheesy and rather cliché storyline. Some people may have different views but this movie just wasn't my idea of an entertaining comedy/drama. It was instead a great waste of my time; I had to stop watching half way through!
view_and_review The barbershop, especially in Black culture, has always been a communal spot. The shop is usually packed with shabby heads waiting to be groomed while the barbers quickly and carefully shaved and shaped the hair of the head in front of them. The barbershop was never short on conversation, hot topics, and a wide array of opinions."Barbershop" did a good job of capturing that in comedic fashion. Although Ice Cube is a sub-par actor, the supporting cast and the story itself were enough to overshadow his poor performance. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Ice Cube is a horrible actor, he just lacks the range and ability to do much more than the angry black man role. The cast of characters was very well chosen. Cedric the Entertainer's presence helped the movie a lot. There is not a movie that he is in except that he enhances it.The movie had a nice even tone to it: not too funny, not too serious, not too much going on, not too many slow parts. The main story was nicely complemented by the other sub-plots involving the other characters. I'm especially pleased that the Barbershop was not depicted as a vulgar place not suitable for kids or anyone with decent morals. I wouldn't mind seeing more movies like this.
Special-K88 Likable, engaging story about the day to day operation of a black barbershop in downtown Chicago. The plot centers around Calvin Palmer, a promising young barber who inherited the family-owned shop years earlier from his late father and his attempts to save the shop from foreclosure even if it means agreeing to an offer from a miserly neighborhood loan shark. Cast is appealing and enthusiastic, the story interesting and well-intended, but it's let down by bickering characters, uneven comedy, and a few distracting subplots. A decent way to pass the time, and a good change of pace for lead actor Cube, but it's never quite as on target as it needs to be. **½
BrohmaBull007 .............. but I liked this movie. I'm glad someone could capture the essence of an all classic barbershop. I know people had to have seen something like this in TV shows. The black barbershop has all black people talking about stuff they saw on TV, music, or white people. I also like the fact that this is in downtown Chicago. Its got that touch to it. I like all the topics of discussion as well as the cool moments in here. Ice Cube really shines as the cool and calm Calvin. I wasn't expecting much from this movie but Id say it delivered in a big way. Barbershop captured every essence of just what its like in a barbershop, music playing........ uncensored topics....... TV roaring. I like the attitudes of each character and glad they are all different. Overall if you're looking for something.... real or something about a barbershop looking to make it big. This movie is for you 9/10
