Synopsis

It's a movie for everyone whose life has been thrown off-course, out of whack, or simply not turned out the way they planned it. In other words, it's a movie for everyone, period. Set in suburban Long Island in the summer of 2002, with the psychic wounds of 9/11 still fresh, A Little Help is a story that takes a comic, searching and profoundly empathetic look at a few pivotal months in the life of dental hygienist Laura Pehlke (Jenna Fischer)-an ordinary woman whose life suddenly flies off the rails-and her heroic efforts to re-establish a sense of security and normalcy for herself and her son.

Cinnyaste Ms. Fischer is, in an extremely limited way, talented. Her deadpan served "The Office" well. However, in a dramedy requiring acting chops, such as "A Little Help," she falls flat on her cutish face.Striving for slice-of-life befouled in in a web of lies, Ms. Fischer's flat affect singular expression spoils the fun. She's a TV actress, period. (See also "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" for that same expressionless facade.) It's not so much Ms. Fischer phones in her performance, she doesn't even have a phone. Drunk? Same as sober. Angry? Same as calm except something is thrown. Someone should really tell her as she seems clueless (as to why more film roles aren't offered). That said (and it's plenty when the lead can't pull off a simple role - this isn't Shakespeare), the rest of the cast looks embarrassed and bored. And why not. They're mostly hacks (Leibman and O'Donnell??) who never really had great careers. They were bought on the cheap for this poorly written Indie flop. Kim Coates buoys the proceedings and stands out, but it ain't sayin' much when you're surrounded by talentless actors."A Little Help" is unwatchable. Save your time and instead watch paint drying. The entertainment value is identical.
TxMike I found this one on Netflix streaming movies. Offbeat and different, I enjoyed most of it, but nothing is tied up at the end, all the issues are left hanging. I suppose that was the intent, maybe just to say now Laura for the first time in her life realizes fully what is going on around her and has a chance to deal with it. Or, maybe they just didn't know how to end it any other way.Jenna Fischer is Laura. She uses a very understated style for this character, plays her not necessarily as an unintelligent person, but maybe just a bit slow to organize her thoughts and realize what is going on. Like the scene where her son's teacher ends with "He was a real hero." Laura is just agreeing then after a few seconds realizes she has no idea what the "hero" comment meant. It turns out her son told everyone at school that his dad was a firefighter who died in 9/11 while saving people. In another scene her sister's husband ends up confessing to her that the main reason he married her sister was so he could remain in Laura's life, and she responded with a slight smile, "How's that working out for you?" (You had to be there.)Her husband is played, briefly, by Chris O'Donnell as Bob. Briefly because he dies early in the story, a heart irregularity. Now with him and his good job gone, and with little in the way of life insurance, we wonder if Laura will be able to maintain her life style on Long Island. So her sister eggs her on to hire a lawyer for a malpractice suit.Their son, 12-year-old Daniel Yelsky is Dennis. He is sort of a cute kid but a bit overweight and with a puffy face. He doesn't always tell the truth and isn't always respectful. He does a few things that get them in hot water with the friends and neighbors. One of the kids is an aspiring musician, and his dad surprises him by taking him to work at a radio station. The guest that day is Dion DiMucci (playing himself) and in addition to having a good part in the story itself, it brought back good memories for me, as Dion was one of the popular singers back in the 1960s and 1970s when I was young. In another blast from the past, the son of Bob Dylan, Jakob Dylan wrote the music and sang some of the songs for the movie, sounding not too much different from his dad all those years ago.So overall I liked the movie, especially Jenna Fischer. It is sort of her "coming of age" 20 years after high school
maitre-miyamoto A little help was a surprisingly nice family drama. It isn't your average Hollywood movie. If you expect the typical Sandra Bullock feature, you probably won't like it. If you expect Jenna Fisher's character to be a perfect middle-class mother, you probably won't like it either. It isn't Pleasantville. Her characters smokes and drinks too much. She and her son gets into big fights, sometimes about nothing. And it isn't supposed to be funny like an episode of Married with children or a Wes Anderson movie. If you are looking for a movie with realistic family dynamic and flawed characters who try to do their best, you should watch this movie. Jenna Fisher has a few memorable scenes throughout with her controlling mother-in-law, a litigation lawyer and her son. Despite all her quirks, she is pretty much adorable. Actually, her flaws in the movie make her adorable and cool. It seems that some people did not like the movie because they felt frustrated at the main character's actions. In their eyes, Jenna Fisher's character never does the *right* thing. Sure she made a few bad decisions like lying for her son. On the other hand, I get the feeling that some of the haters just identified themselves with the slimy lawyer or some of the other very judgmental and controlling characters. This is not a must-watch movie but I would definitely recommend it.
usman_ali442 I don't know exactly how to put this into words but what appeared to be a nice drama movie in the beginning turned out to be an average boring movie till the end. Overall the movie presented a psychic storyline with a disturbed girl finding her way out of her husbands death. Coming to the acting, one can say that most of the characters did justice to what they were put through. I am a kind of person who usually don't miss a single scene of movies, even I also had to skip a few parts at the end. Direction was not very good because the movie actually fail to leave some mark in your mind and it is a kind of movie that you won't even remember its name after a week or so.
